Pronouns and pursed lips

I’m still getting to grips with talking to people here in Switzerland. Specifically, with how to address them. Once upon a time at school, it was very easy. In French lessons, since you were only a teenager, your classmates were ‘tu’ and pretty much everyone else (hypothetical French penfriends apart) was ‘vous’. Easy. 'Thou' is the informal form, 'You' being the formal/plural form. Similar to 'tu/vous', in fact.

Oh is that how you manage the tu/vous thing with work? I never got taught that. Anybody would think the English teach languages with the basic assumption that nobody will ever bother to speak them once they leave school.
