The Theatre can be a heartless bitch sometimes. At first I thought 'She should take the 'lesser part' and knock everyone's socks off with it'....but then I thought 'She's obviously a very talented young lady, and could probably get a lead in something better. And closer.'
If you're having doubts, maybe it's a good idea to pass on it. If thinking about the 'part that got away' might distract you and cause you to give less than 100% it wouldn't be helping either yourself or the production.
Where in CT? If you do decide to go for it, we're right off I-91 (Windsor Locks) and could probably help you out with a place to stay for the night if the weather was bad.
I'd just go with the knowledge that you're better and take the other part. It's still a good part, it has your favorite song and you'll have a friend there, (if not two, assuming the tall chick turns out to be cool).
You know you're better, and that's all that matters. You also have a chance to shine in that smaller part, like you said. If you completely upstage her talent-wise, it'd be great to know the people in the audience are wondering why you weren't cast as the lead.
I say go for it and STEAL the show baby!!!! Especially since you'd get to sing your favorite song from the show - I think that sort of evens everything out.
