I always used to bring a book for cardio. Without one, the only thing I'd be able to think about is how achey and bored I was.

I would bet that if your heartrate is lower then you're not burning as many calories. Working muscles require energy and you're not working that muscle as hard. The readout isn't smart enough to know that your heartrate is any lower, it'll read the same regardless. That said, if it makes you a more regular exerciser that seems like a fair tradeoff. I think if you add up all my reading time the vast majority of it ends up being at the gym. Go figure.
