RAM is cheap. Go to Directron.com and check out their selection of Crucial RAM. Of course, you have to make sure what you buy is compatible with your mobo.

What I'd do if I were you is back up any data you want to keep, then reformat and reinstall. You might even want to try an alternative OS, like Ubuntu. (If you don't like it, you can always reformat again and return to Windows.)

Of course, I'd be happy to take a look at your computer for you.

Hmm. How hard is it to take a Windows machine, make it Linux, and then format it back if it doesn't work out? I was holding out for an eee, but I got a kick-ass deal on an Acer Aspire One and it's loaded with Windows. It's got an HDD instead of a SSD, which sucks, but it's 120 GB and has 1 GB RAM, so I'm not too worried about space. *shrug* Thoughts?

It's easy-peasy. In your case, I'd go ahead and stick with XP. If you're just wanting to experiment with the 'Nux, it's easy enough to create a dual-boot on your system. Also, in your case, an HDD really isn't any less speedy or power-efficient than an SSD.

*laugh* I didn't want the SSD because it was fast or power-efficient - I wanted it because I'm a klutz! Ah, well.

And thanks for the tip about the dual-boot system. I might try that!

If you want to go Linux, have at. If you want a legal copy of Windows and MS Office, drop me a line. I still have access to all my LSU software student downloads.

Chuckles I actually spent an arm and a leg in college for a legal copy of MS Office so that's covered, I just need an XP one. I've also come upon a computer that was tossed out from the new apartment I'm moving into, will open the case and see what's inside that can be used. If nothing else its a nice case.
