009; Star Wars

I've had a few days to digest the whole Disney buying Star Wars thing, and in that time I've moved from apathetic to optimistic.

First, Disney has really done a great job with Marvel, and if those are the quality of movies they want to bring to the Star Wars franchise, I'm all for it. I know there are a lot of fans who are - to put it mildly - upset that we're getting more movies (Seriously, Star Wars fandom, what's up with you? Other fandoms would kill for more movies...except maybe The Last Airbender fandom, I think they've been through enough torment.)

I do think that the series will benifit from not having to bow to Lucas' every whim, and I'm glad they're keeping him on as a creative consultant.

I've heard names for directors tossed around willy-nilly, but I'm honestly not sure I want any of the common suggestions taking over the franchise. Joss Whedon would be amazing but he'll be busy with Avengers, and I'd like it to stay that way. J.J. Abrams would also be incredible, exepcially given his handling of the Star Trek reboot (even if we would see more lens flares). I don't like the idea of Nolan at all, but I wasn't a huge fan of the way he's handled Batman, though I can't argue with the trilogy's success. I enjoyed what I saw for what it was - Anne Hathoway was an incredible Catwoman - but I don't really want that for Star Wars. (For the record, I do believe that Nolan was light years better than Burton). If Nolan does come in, I'll be very happy for him to prove me wrong.

Personally, I'd love a relative unknown who just loves the orignal trilogies and wants to do right by them. What Joss Whedon is to Avengers, I'd like this new director to be to Star Wars. (It also occurs to me that Kenneth Branagh might be a good choice, given how much I love Thor - although I can see how his connection to Shakespeare really helped that come together, where as that might not be as much of a boon for Star Wars.)

The only thing that I think could really make me upset: John Williams not doing the music.  John Williams Is. The. Man. He is the Star Wars soundtrack and I will likely shed tears if he is replaced.

I do think that it's just going to make 2015 awesomer. Star Wars and Avengers in the same year? My fangirl heart might just give out.

Okay, I have to make it to 5,001 words today for NaNoWriMo, but I'd love to hear what all you Star Wars fans think. Are more prequel-esque travesties headed our way?  Or could Disney do for Star Wars what they've done for Marvel and breathe new life into the franchise? Is there a director you would like to see?
