Kanji's Story

Kanji is a character from Bokurano, a story that consists of an anime/manga/novel and follows two basic premises: (1) There are infinite versions of the universe you live in, and you are living infinite lives. (2) The main cast of characters, fifteen kids from the same middle school, are tricked into piloting a giant robot that will save their version of the universe from being swallowed up by the other various versions of the universe, but when their contract runs out, they will die.
Kanji's backstory is as follows:
His father was from Japan, his mother from China. His mother was a brilliant architect, and she designed Japan's tallest building, Chutenro Tower.
And when she was done building Chutenro Tower, she fell from its rooftop and died.
Did she fall? Did she throw herself? If she killed herself, then why? Kanji would never know the answers to these questions. In a way, Kanji has always felt worthless since this incident. If his mother was able to kill herself without any qualms, then that meant Kanji never meant anything to her. Did Kanji mean anything to anyone? Maybe not, because shortly after his wife's death, Kanji's father gave him to his brother (Kanji's uncle) to raise. Kanji now lives with his uncle in downtown Shinagawa. His uncle is a drunk and a gambler, and Kanji is allowed to run wild, getting into drag races and being arrested for driving without a license. The boy is screaming for attention and for a real family.
