Character Information
Name: Utena Tenjou
Canon Origin/Series: Revolutionary Girl Utena
School Year: 4th
Gender: Female
Age: 14
Out of school living location: Brighton, East Sussex, England
Blood status: Muggleborn

Personality: Utena is, in many ways, a loyal and selfless friend. She's willing to do anything for those she cares about, from defending their honor to tasting their homemade concoctions. She's very popular, but doesn't let it go to her head- she is who she is, and no amount of popularity can change that. She’s an honest person. Her thoughts and emotions show on her face, and she almost always says what’s on her mind. The only exception is when her feelings are particularly confusing, or could be conceived as anything other than noble. Then, she hides them from everyone, even going so far as to deny that she has them in the first place, or rationalizing them to seem more fitting to her goals.

Utena is very friendly, able to hang out with many different types of people. She can be very naive towards the true intentions of others, tending to think that people generally put their best foot forward at all times. It is hard for her to imagine that someone could willingly cause someone harm, simply because she doesn’t do that herself. But if someone appears to her as truly mean or self-serving, she’ll firmly stand against them, no matter what. She’s very black and white, but the line slides often- if someone apologizes and seems sincere, she’ll gladly accept them back (but not without a little confusion on her part). It’s not in her ability to be cold and unforgiving.

Above all, Utena always follows her instinct on what’s right and wrong. While she may be confused about her motives sometimes, she always finds the right path in the end. Utena is determined to be as noble, trustworthy, and giving as any prince, no matter what.

Canon Background: When Utena was six, her parents died in a mysterious accident. Convinced that there was no point to living if you were only going to die, Utena climbed into a coffin and refused to come out unless she was shown 'something eternal.' She was saved by a prince, who took her out of the coffin and gave her a mysterious ring that he said would lead her to him when the time came. But she was so enamored with this prince that instead of simply being saved, she vowed to be a prince herself- despite being a girl.

When she got older, Utena was led to Ohtori Academy, supposedly by her ring and a desire to meet her prince. From there, she became entangled in a series of duels to own the Rose Bride- Utena's new friend, Anthy Himemiya. Utena manages to win most of these duels, but still believes that she's simply doing this because she is imitating her prince. Really, she has a desire to protect Anthy from the entire school, who seem to be out to get her.

Meanwhile, Utena- despite her claims to nobility and honor- develops feelings for Akio, Anthy's brother and the chairman of Ohtori. Utena falls prey to her own feelings and weakness and can't see Anthy's feelings for her brother, inadvertently creating a rift in between the two of them. But by the end of the series, Utena realizes how ignoble her actions have been and confronts them and Akio in the final duel. She gives up her life in order to save Anthy from the swords of hatred that she is continually impaled with. She takes the swords in Anthy's place, letting the other girl go free from her pain and hatred.

Background (AU!Canon; HP): Utena is the only child of the Tenjou family, a Muggle couple who had moved from Japan to Brighton with the offer of better employment in Britain. Utena grew up happy and loved- her parents doted on her often, and she was the most important thing in their lives.

One day, just after Utena turned six, her family went for a long drive in the countryside. It was a normal day, until a truck ran through a supposedly deserted intersection, smashing into their car and killing Utena’s parents. Utena herself was seriously injured- so much so that her relatives bought a third coffin, in preparation for her death. But Utena didn’t die- she recovered quickly, with the help of her (as of yet unrecognized) magic. Her relatives were shocked, but took it as a miracle.

The night before her parents’ burial, Utena snuck into the church where her parents’ coffins lay and climbed into the spare third, ready to die there. She refused to come out unless someone could show her something worth living for, other than just living to die. Thankfully, she was saved by a mysterious man, who Utena thought of as her ‘prince.’ This man took her out of the coffin, dried her tears, and gave her a ring to remember him by. Utena was so enamored with this man’s behavior that she vowed to become a prince someday, despite being born a girl.

At eleven, she left to go to Hogwarts, where she became popular very quickly (with both boys and girls) for her looks and athleticism. As a student, Utena is fairly average. She particularly achieves at Transfiguration, and in the Dueling Club, though her grades in Potions, Arithmancy, and Herbology are abysmal. She cares about grades, but would much rather be on the Quidditch pitch. Or, even better, Utena would like to be playing basketball and running track. She also seems to get in trouble quite a bit for wearing the men’s uniform, but as she likes to point out, there’s no rule against it.
