Character name: Marie Mjolnir
Fandom: Soul Eater (anime)
Timeline: Anime-verse, after episode 51. Basically, after Maka defeats the Kishin and Marie brings Rachel safely back home! And punches Azusa in her joy. This will all be explained later.
Age: YOU DON'T ASK A LADY HER AGE (in her early 30s or late 20s?! Presumable around 32...?)
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: Marie is a weapon, which means...basically what it implies: she’s of a race that has the ability to turn into a weapon. Her weapon form is a ‘hammer’, in a loose sense of the word-she actually looks like something between a hammer and a tonfa, in full weapon form. Marie is also able to perform partial transformations, wherein she alters a specific part of her body to match her weapon form. While weapons are usually wielded by ‘meisters’, since Marie can perform partial transformations, voila!: she can also fight on her own.
She also has a specific ‘soul wavelength’ (think SPIRITUAL ENERGY that can be channeled by weapons and meisters) that has a calming and soothing effect on others. It is quite literally referred to as a ‘calming/healing wavelength’. So people that are tense or strung-up would feel more relaxed if Marie were to be around, in essence. The ‘healing wavelength’ also has other uses, which will be elaborated on later!
Oh, and she also packs a mean punch. Think: totally obliterating objects and making people bleed from the face levels of pain. THIS IS A LEGITIMATE ABILITY, OKAY.
How would they use their abilities?: There wouldn’t be too much cause for her to fight, probably, but if she had to, she could. She also has some experience as a teacher, so she could teach the upstanding youth of the Thor about souls and all that. Also, IF FOR SOME REASON MADNESS WERE TAKING OVER THE SHIP, Marie could…help people pull out of that madness…?
Appearance: Marie is a curvy woman of average height (helped by ridiculous heels)-around 5’ 6’’-whose looks are deceptive when it comes to her FACE-CRUSHING strength. She has long, wavy blond hair that’s parted in the middle and similarly gold eyes, though one is obscured by an eyepatch of mysterious origin (it presumably has to do with her aforementioned soul wavelength). She dresses fairly conservatively, that is, she’s relatively covered up (except for the obligatory CLEAVAGE that she’s packing-gotta cater to the male audience, yo), and her customary outfit is a black dress shirt and a long black-and-yellow skirt that goes all the way down to her feet.
Here is a picture for reference. Background/Personality:
Not much of Marie’s past is known, but like any other good weapon, Marie attended the Death Weapon Meister Academy (DWMA, for abbreviation purposes), located in Death City, Nevada, starting at around the age one would go to middle school. A bit of explanation is required here: as mentioned before, weapons and meisters are people born with either the innate ability to transform into a weapon, or the ability to wield and harness the powers of said weapon. Those known to be weapons or meisters are the student body of the DWMA, which is run by Lord Death (a rather happy and bouncy Grim Reaper), with the intention of teaching the impressionable youth to stay on the right path (the path of JUSTICE), as well as how to harness their powers to ~fight the forces of evil~. Another goal set by the DWMA is for meisters to eventually turn their weapons into Death Scythes, which can only be done if the weapon consumes 99 corrupted souls and one soul of a witch. It’s a shared goal between weapon and meister-because, after all, the strength of both parties is dependent upon how well their souls ‘resonate’, which can loosely be defined as the compatibility of the partnership. Not any old meister can effectively turn their weapon into a Death Scythe: it requires hard work and trust-building on the part of both parties.
And here it would benefit to say that Marie is, in fact, one of said Death Scythes! Though her school life and how exactly she managed to achieve that status is unknown, she graduated with this illustrious title, hoping that once she became a Death Scythe, she would be able to retire and settle down. Thus, her choice to be stationed in Oceania, where things were relatively quiet. Because she'd have so little to do, she hoped to be able to concentrate on things like finding a significant other and eventually getting married, which is clearly the most important thing in life despite having a badass title like 'Death Scythe'. Clearly.
Speaking of significant others, it would be good to say here that while she was a student in DWMA, she was paired with a meister named Franken Stein, who she had a relationship with for a bit of time. Ah, bittersweet school romances. This fact becomes more important later...
Anyway, back on track. Marie's relatively peaceful life is suddenly interrupted when news arrives that the 'Kishin' that had been locked away and hidden underneath the foundations of the DWMA has been revived. A Kishin is a human that has consumed so many other human souls that it basically becomes somewhat of a monster, taken and driven by madness. It doesn't help that the Kishin is also extremely powerful-- Lord Death himself had to seal its existence away, several centuries pre-canon, by ripping its skin off and sealing it away in a pouch made of said skin. Unfortunately for the good guys, a snake-witch named Medusa, along with her cronies, decides that it would be a great idea to release the Kishin and fill the world with a new order: madness. Though students of the DWMA-- seven of them, including Maka, Black*Star, and Death the Kid, along with their respective weapons-- attempt to thwart Medusa's plan, they're ultimately unable to stop it, and the Kishin rises once again like the most disturbing phoenix the world has ever seen. During the scuffle, however, the aforementioned Franken Stein, Marie's former crush who is now a professor at DWMA, pair off with his other former partner, Spirit Albarn, a Death Scythe, and manage to 'kill' Medusa. Or, at least, cut her in half, which should theoretically kill her. But when do things ever play out that way?
Even with that little victory of supposedly killing Medusa, since the revival of the Kishin is still kind of a big deal, Marie is then summoned by Lord Death, along with the other Death Scythes (though half of them don't show up because THAT'S JUST HOW THEY ROLL), in an emergency briefing and strategy meeting. As predicted, the Kishin's madness is gradually starting to infringe upon the calm of the world, and thus it was necessary for Lord Death to gather his Death Scythes to come up with further courses of action to combat the spreading of the Kishin's influence. This is where Marie is reunited with her friends from her student days at DWMA: Azusa, another female Death Scythe who takes on the form of a rifle/crossbow, Spirit Albarn, and of course, Franken Stein. And it's with Stein that Marie finds herself partnering with again, by orders from Lord Death-- ever since the revival of the Kishin, the waves of insanity that the Kishin's been giving off were hitting Stein particularly hard. Because Marie is known to have a soul wavelength that's calming, Lord Death thought it beneficial to keep Marie around Stein so that she could keep the madness at bay. Despite Marie's obvious distress because of the fact that she'll now have work to do, which cuts down on her ability to go off and find someone to settle down with, she stays in Death City, with Stein, in Stein's lab. She also gets a teaching job on the side, even though initially she accepts the position with some trepidation.
Meanwhile, as Marie settles into her new lifestyle, things are worsening: the Kishin's madness subsequently has led to the awakening of the powerful witch Arachne, who just so happens to be Medusa's sister. In celebration of her revival after 800 years of being sealed away and hiding inside a golem, Arachne starts up a whole ~evil organization~ of her own, aptly named Arachnophobia. Predictably, Arachne wants to harness the Kishin's power so she can, yes, say it with me: take over the world.
To make things worse, Medusa, who is also predictably not dead, is planning more bad things like the evil villainess that she is. She goes ahead and takes over a little girl named Rachel's body, which makes it difficult for people to harm her, for two reasons: 1) the guise of a little girl is deceptively innocent, and 2) it's not her body-- hurting it means you're hurting Rachel. In any case, the plot thickens even more when Medusa approaches Crona. Crona was formerly an enemy to DWMA, a puppet to Medusa's plans. But with Maka--a student at DWMA and Spirt's daughter-- 's help and patience and acceptance, Crona was able to pull away from Medusa's influence and give living like an actual teenager a chance. Before he finds out that Medusa is still alive, Crona'd been attending probationary classes at DWMA, and was actually a student of Marie's. Crona'd made friends for the first time in his life, and was actually enjoying himself, too--
--when Medusa finds Crona and tells Crona that he will be her little spy, and that Crona will comply with her plans. She gives him no choice in the matter, and forces Crona to go along with a plan that involves tricking Marie into consuming a magic snake. The snake serves two functions: one, it'll allow Medusa to eavesdrop on private conversations that Marie and Stein will be having in what they'd consider the privacy of their home. And secondly, and more importantly, the snake serves as an amplifier for madness, speeding up Stein's descent into insanity even when Marie's wavelength should be helping him. In short, Marie, instead of soothing Stein, will be negatively influencing him instead because of Medusa's snake. Marie suspects nothing of this, though-- she's fond of Crona, and when Crona asks her if he can meet Marie in private, she invites him into the lab warmly and encourages him to talk about anything that might be worrying him. That does nothing for Crona's guilt, but in the end, Marie ingests the snake through a cup of coffee.
As Stein's condition gradually worsens and Marie worries about the state her partner is in, the bad guys are still mobilizing. Arachnophobia's next course of action is to steal a powerful magical weapon called Brew, which is protected by a strong magical shield in the form of a storm, in the center of the island where it's located. To counter this, DWMA decides to send forces of their own. Within this operation, Marie and Stein are designated to the position of infiltration, responsible for sneaking past the magical storm and getting the Brew before members of Arachnophobia do. This is all fine and dandy, and Stein and Marie move into the storm, determined to complete the mission and leave as quickly as possible. However, Stein's madness is worse than Marie anticipated-- it's bad enough that Stein can barely even hold himself up on his own, and the two of them are forced to leave the core of the magical storm without obtaining the Brew. However, some of the students (once again, Maka, Black*Star, and Kid, with their weapons) had entered the field as well, and Marie tries to go back inside to get them out. However, she'd been inside the core of the storm for too long: because of the electromagnetic properties of the magical field, her body is unstable. Stein tells her that if she goes back inside, she'd only die a meaningless death. But being the way she is, she tells Stein that she can't just leave Maka and the others inside, to which the other students who are present, Kilik and Ox, express that they'll go into the field and get them for her. Marie protests this vehemently, and threatens the kids with expulsion, but the kids are much more determined and stubborn than she is, and ignore her, much to her dismay. She expresses her disappointment and frustration at herself for not being able to do anything, even when she's the adult, and cries freely while she's admitting to this. All she can do is wait for the students to come back safely, which they do: the kids weren't able to retrieve the Brew, but at least they make it back to DWMA alive.
After this event, Stein's sanity degenerates even further, and Marie and Spirit impose a semi-house arrest for him in an effort to keep Stein safe inside his lab. Marie is still responsible for looking after him, and a bit of time passes until the next ~big bad event~ happens: Medusa reappears, that crafty little bwitch. She turns herself in, but only so she can negotiate with Lord Death-- she reveals the fact that Arachne, who is now in possession of both the Kishin and the Brew, is in fact only in possession of the Kishin. The Brew that Arachne has is a fake, and Medusa produces the real Brew in exchange for her freedom and immunity from the DWMA. She also tells them where Arachne's HQ is, which should lead the DWMA to the Kishin's location. The deal is accepted and Medusa goes free, happy that things have gone according to plan: what she wants is for Arachnophobia and the DWMA to engage in an all-out war, destroying each other in the process.
This is bad for several reasons, but it just so happens that bad can turn to even worse, when Arachne uses the Kishin to further up the ante on the madness that's surrounding the world. That, along with the knowledge that Medusa is out there breaks the last hold that Stein has to reality. He goes missing in pursuit of Medusa, and Marie is left in Stein's lab, worried sick about him. Though Spirit tells her that Stein is strong and won't lose to the madness, she's still unwilling to just leave Stein to Medusa's devices-- she's dead set on finding him and bringing him back, and this resolution is strengthened even further when she finds out about what Crona did in order to speed up Stein's insanity. Though she's angry with Crona for betraying her trust, she volunteers to accompany Crona in a mission to get Stein back. At the same time, she resigns from her position in DWMA so that the deal made with Medusa won't apply to her: she wants to beat the shit out of Medusa, after all. Or, well, maybe not beat the shit out of her, because that would be beating the shit out of Rachel, but. She has her 'healing wavelength', which can serve to push Medusa, the madness, from Rachel's body while leaving Rachel's body unharmed. That's her great trump card.
And off she goes, on a quest to find Stein and bring him back! Though things are tense between her and Crona, when she finally gets to Medusa's lair, Marie sees that Crona has changed, and that Crona has gotten stronger and genuinely regrets letting Medusa exploit his weaknesses in the past. Even so, it's Marie and Crona against Medusa and a manipulated Stein-- the witch is strong, and Marie really can't do anything to really hurt Stein. Stein, on the other hand, is taking Medusa's advice to break everything until the static inside his mind goes silent, and has no qualms with using violence against Marie to stop her from getting at Medusa. Things are looking pretty bad, until Maka and Soul, her weapon, come to their aid. There's more fighting, and Medusa delivers a killing blow to Crona, which enrages Maka and buys Marie some time. While Stein is busy trying to fend off Maka's rage-filled attacks to keep her away from Medusa, Marie finds the exact moment where she'll be able to intervene. And intervene she does, when she finally manages to get between the two and use her Healing Wavelength to get inside Stein's mind (at this point, though it wasn't expressly stated in the anime, we can assume that she found a way to eliminate the Magic Snake from within herself). She sees the broken radio that's constantly producing static inside Stein's subconscious, and listens to Stein's lament when he says that the radio is broken and unable to be fixed, and the only way to stop the noise would be to break the radio as well. To that, she responds that nothing is broken, and nothing needs to be fixed: she tells Stein that Stein is Stein, and all he needs to do is to accept that. That finally brings Stein out of his madness, and the DWMA crew all team up in one final battle against Medusa, from which they emerge victorious. Maka and Soul leave after Medusa is expelled from Rachel's body to join the rest of the DWMA forces in their war against Arachne and the Kishin, and Stein and Marie take Crona, who is miraculously not dead, back to DWMA so that Stein can perform the necessary operation to save him.
Afterwards, Maka saves the world by punching the Kishin to death, and Marie is then seen bringing Rachel back to her parents in the credits. GOOD END!
As for Marie's personality, she's...well, we can start by saying that Marie isn't exactly the most complicated person in the world. She's simpleminded, enjoys conventional, girly things like love and romance, and is prone to be somewhat ditzy at times. She has a terrible sense of direction and frequently gets lost, which is a testament to her occasional moments of airheadedness. Say something negative about the concept of love, and she'll punch you and cry about how you don't understand the virtues of marriage and being with someone. In short, she's somewhat of a hopeless romantic and a crybaby when she wants to be.
But! This doesn't mean that Marie is stupid, nor does it mean that she's incapable of being a deep thinker. She may be emotionally driven and sometimes irrational (such as her brief decision to...marry a toilet...), but she is, in her core, a deeply compassionate and kind person. Marie can be immature in the sense that she can be headstrong and stubborn, as shown in her futile insistence to go back and save Maka and the others when they were inside the magical field in the battle for the Brew, but more often than not, she shows that she's aware of her own immaturity. After she finds out that Crona was responsible for Stein's progression into madness, she admits that she's not enough of an adult to forgive Crona for making a mistake that he didn't want to make-- but later, she also admits that she acted childishly and that she shouldn't have been so hard on Crona, who must have also had a lot on his mind at the time. Marie can often be swayed to act through her emotions, but she also has the ability to step back later and realize her mistakes.
Marie also expresses privately that initially, she didn't think she'd have the patience nor passion to teach a bunch of kids, but found herself enjoying the job and becoming very attached to her students by the end. This indicates, once again, that though Marie can be a bit selfish at times (especially considering that all she wanted to do was retire after she became a Death Scythe so she could get married), when she starts devoting her time to others, she genuinely becomes very...well, devoted to them. This may very well be the reason why she can't keep a consistent boyfriend (we all know that too much devotion scares men off sometimes...), but in Stein's case, her dedication and stubborn unwillingness to lose him worked out for the better. She really dedicates herself to Stein, even despite their failed mission in retrieving the Brew-- even more so, actually, after that. Marie is fussy, maybe even annoyingly so to some, but it's her way of saying that she really, genuinely does care. Stein said it best, really; after Lord Death appoints a distressed Marie to her job, back when she's first introduced in the plot, Stein tells her that she always tries her hardest at everything she's appointed anyway, regardless of if she wanted to have it appointed in the first place. Amusingly enough, she acknowledges this. That says a lot about her.
Marie is someone that'll sit down and listen to you if you have something you want to talk to her about. She's happy when people rely on her for things, and goes out of her way to help. Proof of this is her insistence that Crona come over for a cup of coffee when he approached her about wanting to talk about something. She's strangely maternal like that. Even though Stein and her are no longer in a relationship and haven't seen each other in ages, she's quick to go to his aid, help him out, and protect him. It may be that she still has feelings for him, but whether that's just maternal or something more is up to interpretation. In any case, she definitely cares about Stein and is faithful to their friendship: Marie gets pretty angry with Medusa when Medusa insinuates that she's nothing to Stein, after all. There was definitely a bit of catfighting that went on right there, over Stein...
In summary, Marie is a girly girl who also just so happens to also be a really good person. Yay!
Have you read up on how the game works?: Of course. FlamingFerret is the name of the plugin, and to get money characters can take on missions, mooch off of others, or steal.
1st person sample:
[The audio turns on, and the ship is suddenly privy to a female voice yelling at what is presumably a Vogon.]
What?! But that's...that's impossible! What happened to Death City? And the DWMA? What do you mean it's all...gone?
[Her voice wavers at the last word, as if she's trying to hold back her distress.]
I...this has to be some sort of joke. Everyone's gone, and...my world was destroyed? And I'm stuck on this ship with all of these...aliens?
[There's some muffled protest or other in the background, from an alien no doubt. The only comprehensive bits are "give up", "be fine", and "paperwork".]
[And after those words-- a very loud sound, like a miniature explosion. Because of the shock of the event, the video suddenly turns on to show Marie standing there with a demolished desk in front of her, one fist clenched. Yes, she just...punched that desk into oblivion.]
I don't understand this at all!
3rd person sample:
Marie was lost, again.
It really didn't help that she didn't recognize where she was, or why she was there in the first place-- had she been sleeping? Was this a dream? If so, this was the most vivid dream she'd ever seen, discounting that one dream she had of marrying a prince from some exotic country, and being carried off on a white stallion, and...
...Oh, she was being sidetracked already. She stopped in her tracks, patting her cheeks with both hands to clear her mind so she could focus better on her surroundings. Getting a bearing on them was hard: at least, when she was usually lost, she had an inkling of where she had started and where she was trying to go. In this case, she couldn't recall the starting point nor the destination she was headed for. It was all a mess of chrome and smooth surfaces that she couldn't place in her recollections of any location she'd ever been in before, and she sighed deeply, her expression now crestfallen.
"Where am I...?"
The wisest thing, she knew, would be to just stay where she was until help came. But where was the assurance that help would come? This wasn't any place that she remembered visiting, and thus she had no idea if anyone she knew was here. And the few people-- things, really-- that she'd found passing by had only responded to her in some weird gibberish language that she couldn't understand at all. They seemed to understand her fine, which made it even stranger.
She could feel her despair growing, but she shook her head, willing herself to stay strong. She was a Death Scythe, no, she was Marie Mjolnir, and she wouldn't give up so easily. Setting her expression into one of determination, she moved to take another step down the hall--
--when someone tapped her on the shoulder, which made her turn around and come face-to-face with what she would later identify to be a Vogon.
"Newcomers are supposed to go to the processing office," growled the alien, in a language that she could finally understand. But somehow, the words failed to register-- did this thing really talk to her? More importantly, what in God's name was it?
Now, she was really and truly lost.
