You mean I missed that Dylan thing again?? Rats! I saw him do an interview on 60 minutes a few years ago, and I really enjoyed it. It made me interested in him, and I listen to his music a lot on YME. In that interview he talked alot about how much he hated the questions that people would ask him. It's funny how much people can attach to an artist and his ideas, and then their own agendas start to slip in, and they begin to want something from the artist whether it be additional wisdom or what. Anyhow, I've been listening to him much more in the past few years, and finding meaning in what he sang about.
This is my only music-related icon, but it's such a pretty one, I'm gonna use it anywy!
Hi you there!! I think some of the point of some of the best sixties music was to go between the lines--it wasn't about being instructional, it was about offering an opening through which to see something different, or something recognizble in a different light-- to understand something through an experience that is sort of between the lines. So though it is fine to go in retrospect and analyze or try to explain, it sort of defeats the purpose to ask the artist to do so. He/she gave you the painting, as it were. Now go see what you make of it. The Beatles used to say the same thing. They also used to refuse to tell people what to do. They were arguably the most popular people on earth for awhile and had such power, but what they said was that their message was not to tell people how to think, but to show people that they could swim for themselves, think for themselves
( ... )
I thought it was so interesting in that special how he said that he just can't write songs like that anymore. That his songs were coming from somewhere else, and now they're coming just from him. It's true that his lyrics don't seem human...his poetry and turns of phrase are mind-blowing. I'd like to become more familiar with Dylan. Aside from enjoying his music, I feel like he's an important part of history and he had such an effect on the world. I should go get more of his albums! :)
