Grif had initially considered bringing the Puma with him, but not knowing if anyone else was going to be in on the mission with him, and with not enough information about the territory, he reluctantly left it behind, comforted with the knowledge that if it became handier to have it, he could trigger its on-board PINpoint to bring it to him.
Of course, once he arrives, he realizes that what he really regrets is that Misriah Armory is still a couple of days from completion on his active camo gear, because a man in large orange armor appearing in a flash of light, near dusk on a more or less open beach is not exactly the stealthiest of things in the whole multiverse. It takes him a moment to get his bearings and a lay of the land, and... oh, great, a watchtower right there, sweeping his vicinity with spotlights
( ... )
His speed and a lacking in expectation of sudden visitors (for all their dogged unwavering vigilance) give Grif a decent headstart before he's spotted and a barrage of pulse gun fire opens up to welcome him, sending up divots of sand as they hit the ground.
Additionally there seems to be some source of preoccupation. A pair of soldiers dressed in dark, heavily padded uniforms filter masks and helmets are rushing off in the direction of the hill, and the radio chatter is laden with oddly clinical terminology: exogen, sterilize, parasitics, units necrotized lock, cauterize....
Busy day.
So once Grif reaches a safe spot from their cone of fire, the remaining three guards will have no choice but to step out onto the grated walkway (there is a ladder, by the way) and fire over the edge with their SMGs.
He listens to the chatter his radio scans pick up with some interest as he does what he can to dodge the pulse fire. Not all of the shots hit the beach, but the few that tag him splash off of the shields, bringing the charge down a little. After a moment in the safe zone, though, it picks back up, leaving him back in fine shape in time for the guards to take aim on him.
Unable to resist a moment's wiseassery, he looks up at them. "This is no way to greet a guest!" And then he fires back, controlled bursts to conserve ammo and prevent the gun from kicking up on him much. Once they're down -- and he's pretty sure that won't be a problem -- he climbs up the ladder. It occurs to him that he doesn't really know where on the island Alyx is, so it's time to start a clean sweep, taking down any Combine in his way. He also opens up his radio scanning some more, listening for any frequencies that seem like she might be sending, and also issuing calls of his own. He doesn't know if she's anywhere near a radio, but it's something to hope for.
They appreciate neither your cracking of wise, sir, nor your bullets. While their armour and augmentations give them and edge over their more human counterparts, they eventually go down with little more than a high pitched flatline emitting from their uniform transponders
