My birthday was recently, and one of the gifts I received from a thoughtful friend was a set of three very real, very sharp, and very beautiful Samurai swords. This gift, although fantastic, could obviously pose a threat to the safety of any fool who decided to play with it. I believe people are neither good, nor ungood (I don't believe in true evil, either as an ideal or as any manifestation man might carry) at birth; what surrounds a person makes them. People have instinct, yes - to defend themselves, to breath, eat - but are neither malicious nor good-hearted.

People are made by their surroundings - that's why crime is a problem in the slums of America, why poverty and ignorance are self-perpetuating. Why single-parented children in poor neighbourhoods and poor education are more likely to go to jail. I work in a poor neighbourhood every day - I've seen it. And I've seen good people, and parents looking for a way out, too.

And by the way, I own a suit of armour. Boo yah.

I do agree with a lot of your ideas Niraj. The situations we find ourself in early on and the influences of our parents are the most significant factors regarding who we will become. However, I believe we are predisposed to somethings, and they also play a role in our development. For instance, I believe we each are born with our own unique personalities. When placed in our surroundings, these personalities will frequently determine our response. Some kids grow up in broken families and have almost no sign of hope, yet they work hard and find a way out. Nothing from their early development would explain their reaction, but their inherint will to succeed and a sense of optimism can put them over the top. I believe that parents and situations have the strongest influence on what a child will become, but some kids formulate their own responses and make decisions on who they will become utilizing their own natural judgement.
