We'd been talking for two weeks, and I figure it's time for a date. So I take a chance and plan a weekend in Beijing. B is still saying she doesn't know how much time she'll have, but I take the risk anyway. The weekend rolls around and I'm beginning to realize that I'm about to fly 6.5 hours for a date. Crossing cultural lines is usually a difficult challenge, and unless you're both very flexible, patient, and understanding people, extra verbal communication might be just the thing to help sort this thing out. It's probably not as sexy or exciting, but it might help the relationship build, last, and get through periods where one or both of you are feeling confused or uncomfortable about something said or done by the other.

Extra verbal communication is a must. However even that is hard, because with one of us translating in and out of english, the conotations can be very different. Sometimes B and I have had to make 5 minute tangents to explain the background of a statement. On the other hand though, it's really interesting to learn another culture.
