This will be the first Christmas I celebrate.

I celebrate because I want to learn more about my friends. This seems like such an important tradition for them. I've never had such things.

What was it like?

Without faith, but with an open heart, then.

Warm, surrounded by warm, black waters, but sparkling like a diamond still holding the sun's light. The lights of the Night Island do not turn off until the sun makes them redundant.

There are people, so many people who come and who go, conducting their own business in the shops and galleries that I have had built there with my home a silent center. When I want peace, I have peace. When I want to watch people living their lives, I am surrounded.

It is the home I have created for this time of my life.

There must be some who will celebrate their own miracle of light. I am not among them.

I do not prefer the dark. I observe the turning of the year in my own manner.

I am torn deploring the Jewish fare or the Nativity, or the Yule that spurned them both.

Ah, but we are not children.

I normally like Christmas.

Maybe I'm too old.

Or maybe you are carrying too much for your heart to rise.

And to some it will be a day as any other. Long days or short, warmth is ever fleeting.

This is so. Not everyone has the luxury or inclination for celebration, however small.

Indeed. There seems little enough to celebrate.
