Had a really fantastic sunday. I had been dreading doing a car boot sale for ages, knowing it would be an early Sunday am, might start raining and that I'm selling such rubbish how could anyone possibly want it.
Anyway, I've discovered a few
. most of these admittedly I didn't actually have to try as such but...
1. Turn up late. In fact, turn up too late, so they let you through into the closest slot to the main gate because there are too many punters to get through to the last spot that you rightly deserve for being such a late f**ker!
2. Be unpacking and organising your stuff for the entire 3 hours. I recommend getting key items out earlier to draw the punters in. CDs arranged on a red blanket are effective at this. People are drawn to red like magpies. If people see you're still unpacking, something's triggered in your mind that the good stuff ain't gone yet. They also know they won't get the 'hard sell' because she's too busy with her own stuff.
3. Look like a middle-class, naive, greenhorn :-) She'll have good stuff to sell, won't know what it's worth, will be easy to haggle and probably doesn't need the money anyway. Hence more people will come to your stall. For that added touch, get an old purse, with nothing in it, and put on your bonnet or somewhere similarly 'accessible'. There has to be something to draw everyone to your stall, even the rotten thieves!
4. Raise the price of the items that attract attention to your stall, so you don't lose them too quickly. Cute yoy dogs, gold ballgown (would you buy it? No! But you'd like to be going to the occasion that warrants it don't you. And since so much selling is based on appealing to the life you want to lead as oppose to the life you actually lead, choose the tactics that work). Also anything red and sparkly. And pretty lamps/ romantic looking presents for the 'missus'.
5. When clothes sell, leave the empty hangers. Leaves the impression of a well-visited and store with something worth having.
This having not been enough excitement for the day, I proceeded to pick plums at a secret location in Bristol (2 bags full! I need something to do with them still!) and it was a beautiful afternoon.
Then I was a waterbaby at the open air swim in Frenchay swimming pool (only staff, I'm afraid, but I can take a guest....)
I went back home and made and ate a spaghetti bolognese and ate it with a hunger that I have not felt in weeks, like an animal.
All in all, a fab day and one where I've felt the most alive in ages :-)
I also had an extremely wierd dream at night but I'll spare you of that one I think!!!
