yeah, from a recent post of a friend's, i know that marissav and shephi have taken it, shadow started and then stopped, and i seem to recall tucker recommending it strongly to me, implying that he has too. the consensus appears to be 'having programming/scheme experience is probably good, so you can concentrate on the physics'.
Don't know what 12.008 is, but if you see a chance to make yourself comfortable coding, jump at it. If you want to have a career in (physics/astronomy) research, you will be much happier if you can code something up easily without having to actively think about the code itself much (i.e., if it comes fairly naturally).
