If You Go Down To The Woods Today

Ridley Scott's new interpretation of the Robin Hood mythos - relevantly titled Robin Hood - was much like a Dresden golf course after Arthur "Bomber / Butcher" Harris's boys had paid a visit to that formerly most glamorous of Saxonian cities: under fucking par ( Read more... )

Ouch. I could have warned you against this one. Modernistic 'takes' on Medieval British legends/history are never any good. Remember 'Braveheart?' 'First Knight?' The Costner 'Robin Hood?' The 'King Arthur' with Keira Knightley? (OK, she DID look hot in that woad.)

I have seen exactly one movie that gave the viewer some hint of what Middle Ages Britain was like, 'The Navigator,' and that was a good original story, not an umpteenth remake of a property that has been stale since 1400 AD. Look, Errol Flynn IS Robin Hood and always will be. Nobody else should even try, let alone the sullen and dogmatic (or drunken?) Mr. Crowe. He's a good actor, but he should have known better.

Wait...what? The Normans GO HOME in this version???? Oh, saw my leg off and carry me home to die, as Mr. Clemens said.

That's one of the great terrible movies of all time, a real larf riot. Nicol Williamson in full bull goose looney mode, eating the scenery while the Carmina Burana blasts on the soundtrack? You've got to love it.

At least most everyone came out of it looking like a cunt.

Yeah, the scenes in France were probably the best part.

I was more irritated by the proto-Magna Carta bullshit they tried to sneak in, myself.

Needless to say, I'm not holding out hope for Scott's return to sci-fi.

Yeah, they seemed to imply that Magna Carta was some sort of workers' rights act with the people's mandate behind it and not a charter dealing with aristocratic privileges. To see criticism of Richard in a Robin Hood film was original though.

At least most everyone came out of it looking like a cunt.

Quote of the week, methinks.

Go and see Bad Lieutenant.

Though I guess that's more "bastard" territory.

Doesn't matter either way, it's Werner Herzog and Nic Cage.

P.S. New DooM II episode which was supposed to be an XBLA exclusive got ripped in seconds and you can now run it on your PC.

Y'know, I watched Wild at Heart for the first time just now and I'm suddenly in a very Cage-y mood.

Cheers for the D2 episode.
