Character Information
Name: Kuranosuke Koibuchi
Canon Origin/Series: Kuragehime (Princess Jellyfish)
School Year: 6th
Gender: Male (although he enjoys dressing in women's clothing, Kuranosuke is a cisgender male)
Age: 17, for the purposes of SH. He's older in canon, but only by a year or two.
Out of school living location: London, England. Canonically, Kuranosue's family lives in Tokyo as it's where Japan's major political activity takes place. Similarly, the British Ministry of Magic is in London.
Blood status: Halfblood: wizard father, muggle mother

Personality:
Judging from Kuranosuke's status as the son of a rich, powerful family with high standards for their children, you'd probably expect him to be stern, well-mannered, and horribly former in order to maintain good business connections.

You would be quite wrong.

Kuranosuke is, first and foremost, always his own person and never a conformist. His preferred manner of dress -- expensive, trendy drag -- is the most obvious clue to this fact. He doesn't even crossdress for the reasons some might expect; he is, in his words, "normal", and simply does it for rebellion, fun, and an honest love of women’s fashion. He’s not someone who wants to be different just for its own sake. Rather, Kuranosuke isn't ashamed of his own interests and preferences, and if they happen to be against the mainstream, so what?

This interest in fashion comes first and foremost from his mother, a woman he hasn't seen since he was small. Her own interest in fashion inspired his, he still treasures her old things, and he longs for the day he can meet her again. Clearly, he’s not the sort to give up on working toward what he really wants: even though the rest of his family refuses to give him any information about her, there’s no doubt in his mind that he’ll meet her again one day. This determination extends to more everyday situations as well, such as when he spends much of the series charming and helping a group of women who need a little bit of a push to be as fashionably successful as he is.

That determination goes along wonderfully with his bold personality. He's blunt, fearless, and happy to be noticed, the sort that thrives on socializing, attention, and being with people. Far from a subtle person, Kuranosuke can be highly emotional, at least when it comes to having fun: he may try to hide when he’s embarrassed, but his angry and happy feelings are another story. That attitude has won him many friends and, apparently, few enemies. He has a social life so busy that he sometimes has to turn down girls asking for fashion advice or dates because it's become so commonplace and droll.

And he's certainly not the sort to let his life bore him. On the contrary, he loves excitement and new experiences. Unlike some people, to him, potential excitement doesn't only come from clubs and sex and danger. Even making friends with nerds or learning how to make a dress can be a satisfying challenge in his eyes. He’s pleased as punch when he realizes how odd the Sisterhood is and how unused he is to their brand of fun and passion, and becomes fascinated in finding out what it’s like to be an otaku.

Finally, Kuranosuke is a bit of a natural performer. Although he doesn’t act any differently in drag by default, he’s happy to put on a show when necessary. Uncle is visiting? Charm him and then run. No boys allowed? Suddenly, he’s acting twice as womanly. He seems to enjoy tricking people - not to be hostile, just as a bit of a game - and has a tendency to fight against his family’s oppression by, for lack of a better word, trolling them.

In sum, Kuranosuke is a boy who fights with fashion to be the person he wants to be and enjoy his life. That’s far from an easy task, but he’s just the sort of determined, lighthearted, and tough person who can handle it.

Canon Background:
A lovechild of a stuffy politician and a stlyish woman, Kuranosuke didn't have the opportunity to spend time by both parents: he was raised mainly by his father. His memories of his mother are few but precious, and mostly accompanied by her closetful of beautiful dresses and accessories. Even as an adult, Kuranosuke desperately wants to see his mother again, but is unable to due to not knowing where she lives or how to contact her.

Despite living in such a family, Kuranosuke grew up to be nothing like his stern father or (significantly less stern) Prime Minister uncle, and in fact rebels against their expectations. Unlike his half-brother, who is expected to continue the family tradition of politics, Kuranosuke only wants to have fun with life and indulge his love of fine things, particularly clothing. When he started college, his interest in clothing blossomed, and he began not only to admire women's fashion but also wear it himself. The reason, he explains, is simply because he enjoys it... and because it keeps his family's expectations low. Instead of living the dreary life of a politician-in-training that his half-brother is being put through, Kuranosuke enjoys a carefree life full of parties, fashion, and the affections of women. It seems to bore him sometimes, having everything he wants, but it's better than the alternative.

Things change when he runs into Tsukimi, a jellyfish otaku, and ends up assisting her in saving the life of what she deems to be an adorable jellyfish and taking it safely to Amamizu-kan, the old-fashioned boarding house in which Tsukimi lives. The residents of Amamizu-kan have dubbed themselves the "Sisterhood", geeky women with no need for stylish people or men, but that doesn't deter Kuranosuke from coming back again and again making himself right at home. Thus far, he's been able to keep up his charade of being a woman in front of them, and has inspired them to fight against threats (from his family) to their precious home.

Background (AU!Canon; HP):
(dirty) The illegitimate child of a up-and-coming wizard politician and a stylish muggle women, Kuranosuke was only able to spend a bit of time with his mother before being officially taken in by his father. It wouldn't do, he said, if the public found out that he had not only had an affair with a muggle but also left her with their child. Even at that young age, though, Kuranosuke was already charmed by his mother's vast collection of gorgeous clothing and dreamed about being able to wear such beautiful things himself.

The family he was brought into had no interest in pretty things, though; they were and continue to be strictly political. As Kuranosuke grew, he watched his father and uncle rise in rank at the Ministry of Magic, and his older half-brother begin to study to do the same. He, too, was encouraged more and more forcefully to walk the same path, no matter how clear he made it that his interests lay far away from their stuffy world.
Kuranosuke's family was thrilled when he was admitted to Hogwarts because they wouldn't have to worry about him getting the necessary education; Kuranosuke was thrilled to be able to get away from them for most of the year. At Hogwarts, he could be a bit more open about how much he envied the fabulous clothing that muggle women -- and even witches -- were allowed to wear. He was still teased, of course, by blood purists and students that didn't think boys should care about clothes, but his extroverted nature, honest passion, and thick pocketbook won him more friends than enemies.

In his fifth year, Kuranosuke began to do what he'd been considering for years: crossdress (in the girls' uniform for classes, and muggle womens' clothing outside of class - although not every day, only when he was in the mood). He found it fun and liberating to be able to wear exactly the clothing he liked rather than just admiring it, and despite the feelings of many of his classmates, he didn't feel that it threatened his masculinity or sexuality one bit. His family, of course, did not approve one bit, but that was just a lovely secondary effect to Kuranosuke.

Now, in his sixth year, everyone that matters has gotten used to Kuranosuke’s quirks. He still doesn’t enjoy his family thinking that eventually he’ll get over it and join them, but things are a lot more fun this way! (diana)

How would your character fit in to each House?

Gryffindor: While his bold personality might seem like that of a Gryffindor, Kuranosuke doesn't have many of the house's defining traits. It wouldn’t be a lie to say that he can be chivalrous and brave, but neither of them are really very important traits compared to others. He does have guts to spare, though - almost a necessity for crossdressing, especially against the preferences of one’s family.

Hufflepuff: Kuranosuke isn't always one for fair play; on the contrary, he’s willing to be pretty sneaky when necessary. He can be a hard worker, yes, but on the other hand, that only applies to things that he truly cares about such as fashion. And while he's loyal to the Sisterhood, that seems to be an exception rather than the norm for him: he’s happy to turn down other friends that seem to trust that he’ll be there to help them with their outfits.

Ravenclaw: Although he's a student in canon, not much focus is given to how well Kuranosuke does in his schooling. He's probably fairly intelligent, though, given that his family seems to have fairly high standards for him, and his grades are certainly not what the take issue with. "Creative" is a good way to describe him, though: he's extremely fashionable, and creating stylish outfits seems to come naturally to him.

Slytherin: Tsukimi once described him as an "evil witch", which is pretty accurate., and while he doesn’t fit the sterotype of the totally evil Slytherin, Kuranosuke has all of the traits that define the house. He knows how to get what he wants, and he feels no shame in using somewhat underhanded methods like bribery. He’s certainly a leader: people turn to him for guidance and advice whether he likes it or not, and likewise he helps the Sisterhood out of difficult situations even when they don’t ask for it. And despite being a spoiled rich kid, he knows how to be resourceful even without his credit card when the situation calls for it.

Sample Journal Entry:
I’m kind of bored, so does anybody want some help with their outfits for this weekend? I was so worried about looking good for Uncle when he visited that I haven’t been able to talk with anybody else. At least he said he liked the modern disco look a lot more than our boring uniforms, that made it a lot more fun. And Dad hated it, of course. ♥

Anyway, it’s way too quiet around here, especially during the winter. Better than being at home, but not by much sometimes. What do you guys even do for fun? Is there a party or something going on soon? Man, I just really want something different to happen…

Sample Interaction Post in Third Person:
Kuranosuke sighed, more focused on balancing a quill on his nose than the assignment in front of him. He didn’t dislike doing his homework, it was just so damn tedious. Did any of this really have any purpose in the real world? Certainly not his world, although Shu probably thought that public-speaking charms were the most important invention of this century. Seriously, if you weren’t brave enough to do it anyway, what was the point of making a spell?

After five very meaningless minutes, he wandered over to the common room. That was where the fun was, after all; school could wait. He hadn’t bothered to get dressed up much (yet) thanks to having piles of things to study, and donned just (what he would call) a simple miniskirt, blouse, and tights. “Hey, Kura!” a fifth year girl waved to him as soon as he came in, three different scarves in her other hand, “What do you think of these?”

“What for?” he cheerfully responded as he joined her on one of the couches. “If it’s a party, the stripes are cutest, but a date might want something sexier!” He wouldn’t call her a close friend, really, but the girl was stylish enough and great to have at dances, which was good enough for him. Soon enough, several more had gathered around them, cheerful and giggling. Now this was a thousand times more fun than homework, and more meaningful, too. Anybody could make an O, but sometimes Kuranosuke felt like it was him alone who could save the school from dull outfits and boredom.
