Damnit. The grad students who I beat out last year came back this year to kick me in the ass. I worked so hard too, and I don't think it's possible that someone could have worked harder this summer... Unless they took less of a break than my 4 day break in July. I also did the Cinci flute symposium, bought a new headjoint, studied intensively

My roommates (both flutists) go through the trauma of auditions every year too, and this was the first year either of them were remotely satisfied with their position. Last year one of them didn't even move up a seat, after practicing for /years/ over the summer, only to get first chair of the top orchestra this year. There's a whole political system behind auditions, and they may be placing you some place this year because they need someone reliable and strong, and intend to reward you for paying your dues next semester...who knows. Plus...grad students... at least it wasn't some big hierarchical shift, you know?
