Today, when we went to Walmart to buy ink cartridges, Leigh discovered that The Hobbit was out on DVD. So we went to the movie rental store and borrowed it for the night. (Yes, we have a meatspace movie store we can drive to where they hand us physical DVDs. Also we rent movies from there. It really is the dark ages up here ( Read more... )

What's his face, the brown wizard. He's got a little sleigh thing pulled by MANIC HOPPING BUNNIES. In fact, there is a carrot dangling in front of the chariot at one point to tempt them on. It's brilliant.

I think we joined the movie store just for the archaic feel of it--but they rent free kids' movies (five days free!) and have a large section of Wii games, so.

Don't expect deep characterization. Do expect Gollum being awesome and some really lovely panoramic shots of New Zea--um, Middle Earth. :)

Imma be upfront: I don’t get why people ship Bilbo/Thorin.

Me either. I haven't seen the movie, and it's been...thirteen years since I read the book, so maybe my memory of the story is just not up to snuff, but I really feel that there's not much to ship in The Hobbit. For a story that's secondary genre (after Fantasy, of course) could be deemed Dudebro-ness, it has remarkably few homoerotic undertones or even undertones that my slash goggles construe as homoerotic.

Also, has he made a deliberate sideline in “person who keeps trying to be normal and then is thrown into abnormal circumstances which he kind of relishes while still kind of resenting”? Or is it an accident?

*thinks about it* Ah, you're so right. And they're some very substantial characters in the literary sphere, too. I don't think I would have been inclined to associate Arthur Dent with John Watson, or John Watson with Bilbo Baggins if it weren't for Martin Freeman and the way he plays each role.

I haven't read the book, but it struck me that there really wasn't enough character development in the movie to warrant shipping anyone. Too much backstory, too little characterization overall.

For a story that's secondary genre (after Fantasy, of course) could be deemed Dudebro-nessLol, yes. They shoehorned in One Lady Elf (who is apparently attested in the supplementary texts), and that was it, the only female person to appear on screen for three hours. If I'd been writing the script, I would have genderswapped a bunch of the dwarves, but that's why they don't let me direct major motion pictures ( ... )

Dude, that class sounds awesome. I...may possibly have given one of my courses the subtitle "There And Back Again" because I am the biggest dork? LOOK IT WAS ACTUALLY RELEVANT TO CONTENT OKAY. And because my students were awful, nobody got the joke.

INSUFFICIENT DRAGON WAS THE MAJOR PROBLEM WITH THIS MOVIE

I admit, I wasn't paying 100% attention, but I'm kind of mystified that my head didn't snap up when whatever character he voiced in this one showed up. I mean, my ears were open. They should have taken notice.
