I know exactly what you mean. Actually, I think that's why I like anime conventions.. it's not exactly that anime is my main love, but it seems like the people who attend anime conventions are equally nerdy as me, and are more likely to like the same things I do even outside of anime. I don't feel as at home with others as I do at anime conventions.
I also am lucky to have a friend who shares most of my interests so we can call each other to ramble about stupid things-- but then I'll be SO EXCITED by something I want to talk to more than just one person. Or something happens at work and I have a coworker I can try to explain things to and she may kind of get the idea after the explanation but she doesn't get itI think there are so many great things out there that are underappreciated because people like you and me appreciate the things that are not mainstream. I personally think a lot of stuff that's mainstream is total crap but a lot of things that have cult followings but don't get mindless followers end up getting the shaft
