Katrina aftermath, and helping out a displaced friend...

My friend in Gulf Port, MS got rather hosed by Katrina. He worked at the hotel/ casino stuff- you may have seen you know, ships parked on those hotels on the news. Apparently, while unable to work and unemployed and still you know, having bills that need paid... he did not get screwed enough to qualify for any assistance from FEMA. i know nothing about taking a bus, but i am guessing it is cheaper than flying. or amtrack? if i can help you out with anything when he gets here let me know.

greyhound is cheap as a motherfucker. seriously.

i think you'd have troubles with Amtrak and finding anything close to a direct route, though I haven't looked at them in eons.

yes, greyhound...shitty but cheap.
Retail places always hire-Starbucks, Sears, Target, etc....not glamourous but work and thats what he wants..

A few other people I know just put the word our locally that an evacuee was coming to stay with them and could anyone offer anything. Both people got TONS of stuff from friends=extra clothing, bedding, toiletries, food, etc....For One couple in Dallas, they found an apartment after staying with one of my friends. Would you believe that the apartment building manager put the word out that 2 guys from NO were moving in and could use some help & had all kinds of stuff for them when they moved in.

Also many small church groups or Jewish organizations (if you're jewish) will help out alot too.
