Computer Networking

Nov 24, 2008 23:45

Right so I've set up my old pc in Vincent's room and bought what I thought was the right thing to be able to connect to the internet without wires.
A bluetooth dongle thing.
I think I may have bought the wrong thing.
Any one free tomorrow evening that fancies helping me set up the computers on a network?

Bluetooth ain't the way to go really hun. Technically it's possible to hook two bluetooth dongles together to network them, it's not generally pretty.

Practically, the best way is to get a wireless router and a wifi card / USB wifi stick for his computer. Alternatively, at a push, you can slap a wifi stick on yours as well as his, and share up the internet that way, although signals tend to be nowhere near as strong/reliable.

Finally, the other alternative is to route it via powerlines, but that's probably overkill. *laughs*

(Random advice, hope it helps.)

I would like to pretend that any of that made sense.
But it didn't. I have a wireless router. I thought the bluetooth thingy would pick up on that but I was wrong. I need a wifi sticky thing apparently!

Heh, needing a wifi sticky thing just about sums up all of the above if you have a wireless router ;-) I recommend the Linksys kit, and the Netgear isn't too bad either. Belkin tends to be shit.
