”I envy your mount, my lord”
It had been several weeks since the wedding and Lothíriel was beginning to get desperate. She wasn’t sure if it was her fault but obviously her husband the King of Rohan didn’t like her. On their wedding night he had cut his thumb with a dagger and smeared the bed sheets with his blood so it would look like their marriage had been fulfilled. To her newly wed wife he had told he was too tired and since that night his days had been filled with the governmental issues until the small hours and after few hours rest the office called him again. Lothíriel was confused.
“Nannerl, do you know why the King doesn’t like me?” she asked of the old nanny who had taken care of the King and his sister Maid Éowyn. She and the old woman had become good friends; they both loved the same man but differently.
“My dear child, why do think that?” The old nanny asked. She felt sorry for the young woman because the King didn’t want to get to know her better or was frightened of her.
“He hasn’t asked for our marital duties...” Lothíriel was hesitant ”… even in our marriage bed.” She finally confessed.
“Really” The old woman asked and was left in her thoughts. “He has a bad habit to store his most valued thing on a stand. When he was a little boy he never played with his favourite toys but admired them carefully”, she finally told her queen.
Lothíriel’s eyes flashed and she wow a plan with the older woman’s help.
During the dinner the King watched his queen closely, she looked like she had changed somehow. He could pick her faint smell of mint and the dinner smelled nicely of cardamom. He wondered if the spices were affecting him since he felt warm and his thoughts were wandering far from the governmental issues. On the other hand propagation was a governmental issue too, he noticed while he took a bite of a sweet bun spiced with cardamom and his eyes darted on his beautiful young wife who smiled at him gently.
“I’m going to bed”, Lothíriel announced after she had finished her meal and continued: “Will my lord stay long?”
“I’m going to read some old papers still so don’t wait for me” the young King answered hesitantly.
“All right, my lord”, the young queen said and walked slowly towards the bed chamber. The King watched the curve of her lap and sighed longingly. There were plenty of governmental issues to take care of, the war had made a mess of things and King Theoden’s sudden pass away had also generated a lot of confusion. The issues were new to him and it took a lot of time to understand how the realm worked.
It was late when the young King entered his bed chamber opening the door silently not to wake his wife up. Luckily the moon was full so he didn’t need to light a candle to see where he was going and not stumbling on furniture. Soon he was undressed and climbed to the bed next to his wife.
“Another sleepless night ahead”, he thought, sighed and pushed long hairs off his face.
“I envy your mount, my lord”, his wife said suddenly and the King almost jumped out of his skin for he thought she was fast asleep.
“How come?” he asked when he got his voice back.
“It can be under you all day”, she sobbed. She felt like all her efforts to seduce her husband had been fruitless.
“Poor darling”, he said, stroked her golden hair clumsily and turned to face her. He slid his hands under the blanket and noticed she was naked. Her skin felt cold and he moved closer to warm her. Something else in him moved a bit too and made her smile.
“What if we fulfilled something that was left unfulfilled on our wedding night?”, she asked between kisses and his hands moved on her body.
“I couldn’t… You’re so tiny and graceful..”, the King hesitated and looked into her green eyes which were full of trust.
“I’m stronger than I look”, she sighed and enjoyed feeling his hands caressing her body. Suddenly she felt like she had been divided in two and her consciousness was singing of joy.
They lay happy and fulfilled together, their hair and limbs entwined and the young queen never again needed to worry about her King’s mount. And in time the realm got heir too.
