Trying to remember the name of the story about the handicapper-general - who went around making sure no-one could feel superior to anyone else.
The problem is (a nettle they fail to grasp) that self-esteem is relative. If you fail to set desirable benchmarks for this relativity - in fact frown on desirable benchmarks - the group will set other benchmarks. The in-kids. The successful bullies. The ones who have most money. The girls who can sleep with college freshmen while at highschool. The ones whose parents have best cars... instead of celebrating and giving status to academic or musical or sporting achievement...? That makes sense to me.
