All mining, especially for precious metals, produce hundreds of tons of toxic waste per day. This comes from different parts of the mining process. Once the ore is mined from the ground (often leaving behind large craters in endegenous peoples' land) it must be smeltered and/or refined which produces thousands of tons of Sulfurdioxide and other waste per day. (Other pollutants include: arsenic, acid run-off in groundwater, etc.) Mining claims 10 percent of world energy consumption.
The easiest thing you can do is to purchase non-new/recycled/secondhand jewelry. You can also buy from jewelers that urge the mining industry to change their practices, deamanding their metals "not [be] produced at the expense of local communities, workers, and the environment."
