Oh, I also meant to say, I've been playing
The Movies lately.
I'd been intending to get it for a while (ok, probably more than a year) and finally bought it when I saw it second hand for £10 in Bromley. At first, it didn't make a very good impression. The learning curve is pretty steep, and it just felt like a battle all the way.
After playing about 10 years' worth and making lots of rather big mistakes along the way which would cripple me for the rest of the game, I started again. This time I got 50 years in before deciding I had learnt a lot more and wouldn't make much progress with what I had in hand at that stage. And started again.
Last night I played from 7-ish until after midnight, and achieved good scores. In fact, I kicked ass. And I enjoyed it a hell of a lot more. I'm not really sure if it's a good game - I tend to value infinite play/replayability above all else in a game - but it's entertaining enough for the moment.
The question really comes when I've played through to whatever conclusion it reaches. Will I start another game? Who knows? This last game I'm playing, I haven't watched a single one of the films coming out of my studio. I'm a bottom-line kind of girl, and ultimately they're irrelevant to the actual gameplay. In fact, they're a hindrance, since I lose my train of thought and have to spend a certain amount of time getting back into the swing of it afterwards. I likewise didn't bother investing in the custom script office - when I did use it nothing I did there seemed to affect the ultimate success of the movie, and like I said, bottom line.
Still, it's a decent enough way to pass the evenings in the hostel where there's not a lot else to do, and maybe once I've satisfied the goals of the game I'll enjoy playing around with the freestyle tools and making movies. (it's not very likely though)
