At first I just wanted to type "GodfuckingDAMMIT 2016!" because I didn't think I could bear to compose anything else. But Carrie Fisher deserves better. Of course she was important to me because of Leia, how could I pretend otherwise? I was much more impressed with her than I was with Leia (I think I was too old for princesses by the time Star Wars came out; I wanted to be Han Solo). But my god, she was a survivor. She fell down a lot, but she always pulled herself back up again and just kept right on motoring.

who taught me that you didn't have to be passive, you didn't have to take a backseat when you had better ideas that everyone else, and you didn't have to take shit from evil people just because it would keep you from being seen as sweet

Hell, yes, this. A million times over. She knew the price she'd pay for setting her own terms, and she paid it willingly, because she knew it was the right thing for her. A good writer and a tremendously admirable person, even if not everything she did was admirable. Because she was human and flawed and let the world see her as she was because she had no time for the pretensions of trying to be a "good role model" as a woman.

She will be terribly missed in this household, too.
