I posted this survey last Thanksgiving; the results were interesting, and there have been some changes to my friends list, so I'm posting it again. If you didn't take it last year—or if you did, and want to be re-counted—jump in!At my office today, we got to talking about Thanksgiving food: what we call different dishes, what we put in them, and so ( Read more... )

We actually do several different things with the giblets: use the neck to make gravy, give the liver to the cats, eat the heart (just me), throw out the rest. I actually like turkey heart; it's a muscle, so it's like the dark meat on the drumsticks and wings, but even darker and more flavorful. Saute it, add a bit of salt and pepper, ignore the way people are looking at you, and enjoy :-)

I don't like liver one little bit - not from a turkey or a chicken or a calf or a cow or anything else. J. and my dad do, though, so sometimes they cook up the liver for themselves, but usually the cats get it.

This year, stuffing will be called "Diseased Stuffing" as the scientist have recently shown that you shouldn't cook stuffing in the turkey because the bacteria from the chest cavity just falls down inside, etc.

We cook most of the stuffing separately, but put a little in the turkey to get the flavor; by the time it's been in the oven for five hours, and without too much of it to heat through, it oughta be plenty cooked enough. Then we take the stuffing from the turkey, mix it with the rest, and cook them a bit more - by which time any self-respecting bacteria ought to be dead!

Ditto, that's what we do too.. but, we also set a small plate of stuffing (non-mixed with non-turkey stuffing) too.

I suspected I would be the only one who has "filling," as I'm pretty sure it's a Pennsyvania German thing.

I remember you had it as a "something else" answer last year, so I made it one of the radio-button options this year. It makes more sense than "dressing," I think - after all, it's filling up the inside of the bird.

And here I thought you must have a co-worker with a Dutchy grandmother.
