Oooohhh, I'm gettin' DSL! At least for 60 days; I succumbed to the lure of an AOL offer for a free trial of Verizon DSL, and I'm pretty sure I didn't sell my soul in the process. I've been wanting to get some kind of non–dial-up Internet access for a long time; I'd been thinking about getting it from the cable company, but never took any action on ( Read more... )

Um, our cable modem is like about $50 a month, in addition to the tv part, (we have all the channels so this comes off to be like $160 a month). This includes leasing a modem (IMO superior, because they replace broken ones this way, and if a new better modem comes out we get one for the same money.)

That sounds about like our cable company - they're about $45, as far as I can tell from the very, very small print. I don't know if we're leasing the modem or not, I'll read the small print about that when I get home. (And if not, I'll ask Verizon if it's an option - thanks for telling me about it!)

Oh, don't let them sell you the 'home networking' stuff. It's just basically whatever router they want to buy a lot of, and tech support. You can get a wireless router on the cheap lately, and the tech support is easy, and you can get that from the company that made the router cheaper than $10/month.

Yeah, I meant leasing it instead of buying it - I like the idea of being able to send it back if it's broken instead of having them bill *me* for it. I think once we get it set up for the first time it'll be a lot easier to figure out what equipment we really need and any less-expensive ways to get it. I just can't wait to get off of my 56K dial-up and see what my computer can really do :-)
