Awww, they're so cute! However: *averts eyes from anything even vaguely Japanese while recovering from essay truama*

Lundy cookbook? Gold!

Aren't they just? I wish I had the necessary patience and hand-eye co-ordination to do things like that - sadly, my Sam'n'Dean dolls are the rather messy highpont of my creative career to date, but that's okay, I love them anyway :)

We really should get the cookbook - I bet it has all sorts of goodies like Eggplant Marinara in it!

So what exactly is a hinamatsuri? Is it a seasonal thing? I think I saw some dolls in that general style in our Japantown here.

Hinamatsuri is a Japanese day festival for girls. You set up a shrine filled with dolls (specific sizes/colurs in a certain order) and they're supposed to sort of collect bad spirits and bad luck to them - you then send them floating down a river out to sea, thus taking all your bad luck with them.

As with most things, I just love the aesthetic of it :)

Ah, I actually found the answer with my google-fu. Didn't know about floating them down a river, though, sounds pretty. Reminds me of images where people send candles down a river on little boats for some reason.

Found out that its also a traditional gift giving holiday where you give peaches. There's one girl I know who loves Japanese culture so I brought her a peach, fun times all around.

(Ps., I don't know if my e-mail I sent a while back got to you. Do you still have the same e-mail address?)
