I just lost my hotmail account because I hadn't logged recently enough. As a communication path I didn't really care about it, but as an archive of my past it's pretty painful to lose. Rationally I shouldn't consider it a great loss. The only significant things in those emails were memories painful enough that I couldn't really bear to read them.

that happened to me, maybe four, five years ago. it didn't actually kill my account, but it did erase all the stored messages, so that when I logged in, my inbox was empty. now I make it a point to check once a week or so, although now all of the stuff that I really wanted to protect is gone.
