Requesting opinions on computer stuff

Jan 24, 2009 20:17

I want to build a new computer this year, so I thought I'd post my parts list to see if anyone has any opinions or advise about it. I'm particularly interested to hear thoughts about Radeon vs Geforce.

I'd recommend that one over the one you listed only because Saphire is just a more trusted name and probably has better support. I can't really say, as I haven't owned ATI since the very first Radeons came out. But given that I've used nVidia since then, I'd say that the 4850 and 4870 cards are a hell of a lot better than what nvidia has out (the 200 and 9000 series). They're cheaper AND they perform better. The only drawback is that ATI cards tend to run hot, which may turn off some people. That and people say ATI's drivers suck, but I've never actually seen any proof besides people's opinions

I've got a Radeon 9800 in my computer now and it's worked pretty well. I've never bought a card for a build before so if you've had good luck with the Saphire I'll try it.

Oh, also. You're gonna want to pick up a power supply as well. The site doesnt say what it requires, but I can bet it would need AT LEAST a 400 watt supply.

Sorry man, but I think that the case you picked is ugly as hell. It looks like it came out of an old college computer lab. At any rate I picked the case I did for the extra ventilation more than anything else.

I'd advise you against the 250G drives.

Get at least two hard drives, create a subdir on the 2nd one called backup, and plz don't waste your money on anything less than a 500G. I bought two of these for $65 each last fall. Memory and storage are usually the 1st things to antiquate a computer.
