On "real" Satanists

When I left TOD one of the things I decided not even to bother arguing was why people who are Satanists that do bad things are not "real" Satanists, but if it's a Muslim, Christian, and maybe rarely a Jew they are all 'real' in regards to their religion. No one debates it ( Read more... )

I would generally agree that you have to go by how the person defines themselves. If they do destructive things in the name of their religion they are still members of that religion. I don't think anyone would argue that bin Laden is a Muslim...even if they disagree with his interpretations and actions.

Supposedly LaVey would sometimes use Nazi symbols in his rituals...but more for the shock value and not because he was a Nazi.

Yeah Lavey was definitely not a Nazi. Having read most of his works, especially in the Satanic witch, he encourages people of other races to experiement.

To be fair, the swastika is a peace symbol in other countries (and prior to Nazi adoption it was like a good symbol by the Norse) and is still used by Buddhists. But you can interpetate it any way you wish. :)
