In which Leon approaches Kidd...
Kidd: *sitting in his jail cell "office" trying to balance a pencil on his nose, avoiding working on his case files*
Leon: *Walks into Kidd's office with no fanfare, smoking a cigar.*
Kidd: *nearly falls off his stool at the unannounced arrival* Wh-hey!! You can't just barge in here!
Leon: *Ignoring Kidd's remark.* I'd like to use my free investigation.
Kidd: *darn, and not even a paying customer--most people forgot the offer* Fine then--*grabs his notebook*--is this an investigation or a profile inquiry?
Leon: An investigation.
Kidd: *raises an eyebrow* It sounds like this is a serious matter. What do you
want me to investigate?
Leon: *Looks around to be sure there is no one else listening* The possibility that the Zexen Confederacy is acting as a middleman for another nation, or for Rune hunters.
Kidd: A middleman? What do you suspect their aim is? *starts jotting notes down, his hat sliding down his forehead*
Leon: If it is another nation, they would either Zexen to hand the Runes to them for monetary gain, or for Zexen to destroy itself. Rune hunters are much the same, but the situation can get worse, depending on who it is.
Kidd: *raises an eyebrow* So essentially you think that the Zexen Confederacy is working for someone else to snatch up runes? Do you think monetary compensation is the incentive?
Leon: That and land. The nation, or hunter, could offer to uses the Runes collected to take land from the Grasslands.
Kidd: And whoever they're working for... do you have any leads? And where are you getting this information? I can't go running off investigating something so serious without any leads!
Leon: *Smokes his cigar for a moment.* I cannot risk jeopardizing my sources - That information is on a need-to-know basis. But you might want to look at the Zexen Council member's financial records. You should be able see if someone has given them a "donation" before they started poking around here.
Kidd: *rubs his chin--accessing that information would be difficult to access*
Leon: You should have no problem posing as a financial adviser to access those
records. I would just need names, not the records themselves.
Kidd: So your investigation from me is requesting the names of the potential conspirators? *figures that's a dramatic enough word and continues scribbling notes*
Leon: That's exactly it. If you can't find anything, let me know, anyway.
Kidd: I'll give it my best shot, but this is a pretty hefty case *ugh, especially a free investigation, and he might have to go to Richmond or Oboro for assistance... although Richmond would be better than Oboro any day* And how can I trust that you're not just leading me on a wild and potentially hazardous investigation?
Leon: Finding nothing helps just as much as finding something. I need to eliminate the worst-case scenario.
Kidd: Understood. I knew the Zexens were money grubbing, but if your hunch is correct... *frowns*
Leon: It would be disastrous.
Kidd: No news is good news, in that case. *sighs* I'll admit I'd rather a case like this than "Where is my cat?", but the possibility is disconcerting. I'll do my best.
Leon: I wouldn't have given it to you if you couldn't handle it. *Takes one last smoke before heading back to his room.*
