amazing list of books; i stole a few titles for my "to read" list.
probably a difficult question, but of the ones you've read, which ones would you insist are absolutely necessary for a human being to read during the span of his/her lifetime?
Hmm. Of those on this list, I'd heartily recommend those I indicated in italics. But I'm not sure that any of them are absolute imperatives. Then of course, a book affects ever reader in a different way. For instance, 'Jane Eyre' had a great effect on me, but I can surely understand how it leaves others cold. That said, I think I could insist, with clear conscience, that everyone read 'Slaughterhouse Five' and pretty much anything by John Steinbeck. Of course, I also wish everyone would read my all time favorite 'Of Human Bondage,' but then I'd expect them to love it as I do, which of course wouldn't happen. Thus, I rarely recommend it, so as to avoid the heartbreak of having others reject something that means so much to me. What say you?
