Casitel knows as he and Robert Singer drive towards the cemetery where Michael and Lucifer have met, where Dean is making his last suicidal attempt to save the world, to save his brother, it’s all blended into the same thing now, he knows that this will probably be the last time he gives up everything for Dean.

He has nothing else left, he’ll either burn here with the rest of the humans sooner or later or he can go to the man who is his friend, the man he thinks he might love, and give him five more minutes. It’s insignificant compared to what he has already given up for Dean but maybe it’ll tip the balance Dean’s way, help him somehow. (Maybe this time Dean will see the things his angel has done for him and feel something.)

It isn’t the same as last time, when he dies, he sees it coming and he has already accepted his fate but as Lucifer raises his hand, furious, Castiel realises this isn’t the end, a flash of enlightenment before his existence is snuffed out. And then there’s a warmth, a feeling of validation that comes with knowing that the way he feels about Dean Winchester aside he chose the right side.

The first time he died there was an immeasurable amount of time, of darkness before he awoke in his vessel but this time there is light, blinding light that should burn his mostly human eyes but doesn’t. After that he is swaying, stood in Chuck the Prophet’s living room before he topples and falls to his knees. He looks up at Chuck who stands over him, who smiles and brings a hand to Castiel’s face and says “It’s okay, you did well Castiel.” Castiel leans into the hand and for the second time he mind clears and he understands. He leans into his Father’s hand and his eyes shut against the warm tears that slowly roll down his face and all the pain, the anger, the hopelessness he has felt, melts into relief.
