Achikam Amichai hy"d and David Rubin hy"d were murdered by terrorists on Friday while hiking. And so again, Sylvester, the traditional time for pogroms, is a time of mourning. It's the time we get murdered ( Read more... )

I'm sorry for your loss.

What are pogroms?

It's an indirect loss because I didn't know them, but it hits very close because they were in exactly the same segment of Israeli society as me, and were definitely friends of friends or friends of friends of friends.
Pogroms are... well, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pogrom
Sylvester was the traditional time for them- I don't actually know why. That's why it's so sickenning to see Jews celebrating Sylvester.

By Sylvester, do you mean Christmas or New Year? And if we're talking pogroms, the dates are probably according to the Russian calendar. In any event my recollection is that Easter tended to be most violent (seeing as how it's the anniversary of Jeebus' death, as opposed to his birth). I wouldn't be surprised if the weather also had something to do with it- it's harder to rally a mob when you're all freezing your butts off.

I should explain that- I didn't know Achikam and David hy"d. I did know Binyomin and Talia hy"d.

I've always hated the secular "new year". It's just another drunken Roman orgy.

I'm going to stay home, stay away from the idiots on the road, and make sure that my dog doesn't freak out too badly. Same thing I do every 4th of July.

When I was stabbed, they said much the same... and I never did recieve compensation from the State, or even acknowledgement that it was a terrorist attack. I wonder how many terrorist attacks they cover-up like that- probably more than we think ( ... )

As a result of these charges, on Friday night, following the beginning of the Jewish Shabbat - Sabbath, police invaded the morgue in Kiryat Arba, stripped the two dead men, photographed them and took their fingerprints, in order to check out any past 'criminal' or 'drug-related' past ( ... )

The second group, is Asav, (Esau), which is today represented by 'the Western World,' namely, Europe, the UN and on top of it all, the United States. When the Secretary of State of the greatest power in the world compares the 'plight' of the palestinians to the discrimination against blacks in the United States, when the American ambassador to Israel meets with the president of the Israeli supreme court to 'talk about the occupied territories,' when the President of the United States is adamant about creating a new terror state in the world prior to exiting the White House at whatever price, the agenda is clear. Bush isn't coming to Israel in a couple of weeks to vacation in the Eilat sun. He's coming over to exert as much pressure as he possibly can to receive more and more Israeli concessions, in an attempt to force the 'piece-process' down our collective throats. Israel will have a hard time saying no; Bush is putting too much prestige on the line for Israeli leaders to be able to ignore or refuse his demands. Bush is, today, ( ... )

The name silvester, incidentally, seems to stem from one of the xians' minor deiti-whoops, I mean "saints" - a pope, in fact, who lived at the time of constantine Y"Sh and was closely linked to his conversion to xianity. So celebrating it is in fact a celebration of that event. Kind of turns my stomach, actually.
