Texas take a bow

And I don't normally say something like that! Texas, you are no longer the fattest state in the nation. Hell, you're not even in the top 10! Mississippi...get a move on, you're far too fucking fat! It's an epidemic in this nation, sadly enough. And I'm part of the too fucking fat in this nation, so I have no excuse. And I'm not talking about ( Read more... )

Actually, I think obesity and income go hand in hand. If you're trying to survive at the poverty line and hoping to feed 3 kids using food stamps, it's much easier to make mac and cheese or get McDonald's for dinner than it is to make a healthy, expensive meal. It's not surprising that the poorer states are also fatter.

True, there. But there are tons of food pantries and food coops that sell fresh produce and meat at a discount because they get it wholesale and distribute it through churches and community centers. And I know because my mother buys food each week for our church food pantry when she goes shopping. She gets non-perishables, but it's all veggies, cereals with no sugar and things like that. Nothing that is considered junk food. It's just EASIER to make mac and cheese or go to McDonalds with 3+ kids than cooking a fresh healthy meal from things you had to GET UP AND GO OUT to get at a food pantry. It's not lost on me that laziness and obessity (most of the time) go hand in hand. I'm the laziest person I know and I'm about 40 pounds overweight. So, I'm not admonishing more than recognizing.

Guilty.

Fatty MacFan, fandom cliché, here.

Issues with eating and exercise combined with meds that make the body not process sugar well.

A few years ago I lost over 150 pounds. And then gained almost all of it back.

Maybe I can gather up my motivation to do it again someday. (the losing, not the regaining)

I found when I cut my sugar intake way down that my appetite decreased by about half. I lost about 40 lb. with very little effort, and I was still eating mostly what I wanted, I just wasn't eating that much of it.

I agree with Rhymey...I mean, I'm single, I don't even have a family to feed, but I still find it hard to afford to really eat healthfully. People who are on a very limited budget wind up buying cheap starchy food because that's what they can afford. Have you seen the price of lean chicken and fresh vegetables lately? People with a lot of mouths to feed wind up buying Spaghetti-O's and instant mashed potatoes and cheap white bread, etc. because they can't afford good quality meats, and fresh fruits and vegetables. Sadly, in this country, it's far more affordable to get fat than it is to stay healthy. :(

Food is expensive and it is the junk that is cheapest. Corporate America at it's best. I shop at ethnic markets - hispanic, chinese etc for cheaper vegetables (pesticide is probably an issue - what I don't know can't hurt me, farmers markets (can get deals later in day) and regular grocery stores for all else. when I was single I did a little every few days so it wasn't as much a pain. Good luck. I'm slimming right now but I am a creature of jello and bone! Not the best look (tee hee hee hee)

And I just discovered that for no apparent reason (no change in eating or exercise habits) that I gained 15 pounds. First time I've been over the 300 mark in 15 years. Argh! Looks like I'm gonna have to change something...
