Inara's peace probably didn't last longer than ten minutes, since that was when she was knocked over by a small, dirty, red-haired whirlwind. "MAMA! FINALLY!"

Then, "Where were you?"

Well. It would take Inara just a few seconds to process this, thank you.

"I was in the dorms. Why didn't you come through with your sister?"

Because that made sense as an assumption. She'd loved one person and two children had called her their mother, so they must both be related. That was rational.

She could do this.

Hoban eyed her mother suspiciously, then put a hand to Inara's forehead checking for fever. "I don't have a sister, Mama. You know that. Papa knows that. Heck, everyone on Serenity knows that, since you and Papa don't always use your indoor voices when you're yellin'."

"Yelling," Inara corrected automatically. "With a g."

Obviously that was the rational part to focus on.

As Kerrigan's house hadn't turned out to be a safe hiding place from her child, River had returned to the dorms. Luckily the boy and his father seemed to get along.

Still, it made her feel bad. He was a child, she had sensed he longed for her, just as bad as her daughters from another reality had last year. Neither of those girls would exist in this reality, and Will wouldn't either. Did she owe it to some other version of herself to offer him some attention?

She roamed the park, lost in thought.

"River! River, hi!" Hoban greeted her with a lot of bouncing and waving, but knew better by now than to sneak up on her. "Where are we?"

There was a bouncing child approaching and River blinked, horrified, and crouched for a moment, the mental loudness of the girl flooding her for a moment. "Serenity," she mumbled. "Not mine. Fandom."

"Oh." She stopped where she was, not wanting to make things worse for River if she was having a bad day, but not knowing how to make it better. "No. No, you teach me to fly Serenity when you want to, but I have a Mama and Papa."
