No more pain.

Her screaming stopped abruptly and she fought to regain her breath. Glancing down at her legs, her arms, her torso, she realized that she was no longer bleeding. Indeed, it didn't appear she ever had been.

Another downward glance showed Inara that she was completely dressed in white, a long flowing dress that caught on the breeze, a veil pinned to her hair. She walked slowly toward the edge of the cliff, feeling a sense of anticipation begin as she felt the bright, warm sun on her skin and a smile break across her face.

She started to run, more for the pure joy of it than anything.

She stopped abruptly. Words in her mind, more mocking than sympathetic. She scanned the area, but saw nothing.

He was dog-fighting. They got a lock on him and then--well. It's not exactly a longevity contest out there, now, is it? What did you expect when you took up with a soldier and rebel?

Denial was instantaneous, as was shaking her head, even if it made no logical sense. The words had stripped something bare inside of her, leaving her raw and exposed.

Inara sank to her knees, unable to deal with the loss.
