==flashback==

“You must be Sir Jinki.”

Taemin grinned as he finally found the source of the melodious sound that was wafting through the air. Jinki halted his fingers straight away from pressing the keys of the grand piano and turned his back to witness the rustles of footsteps echoing in the hall.

He wasn’t expecting the other to be so close to where he was sitting, although it was crystal clear that he could smell the mild tantalizing scent that clearly wasn’t his from behind him. Jinki unconsciously flinched when he realized the boy was barely a feet from him. His eyes were on the same level as the boy’s neck and they automatically fixed on his peeking collarbones. His gaze trailed up and collided with Taemin’s, a flash of unspoken interest and curiosity in between their quick stares went unnoticed by each parties.

Taemin stood unsure on his feet, feeling a bit uncomfortable with the unreadable look which the oblivious Jinki sent him. He was slightly fidgeting, causing his mushy black hair to bounce a little up and down from his movement.

“That was really lovely, by the way,” he stated to crack the silence. And to simply give him an honest praise on his playing.

Jinki smiled, eyes disappearing in beautiful crescents. “Thank you.”

“Oh lord, where’s my manner?” The boy snapped at himself, looking rather astounded. “I’m really sorry, I forgot to introduce myself. I’m Lee Taemin,” he bowed a perfect 30o bow to the older, smiling as he said so.

“I’m quite aware of that,” Jinki chuckled, standing up to respond to the latter’s act. “I don’t need to tell you my name, right? I’m guessing you’ve already known how to address me earlier?” He flashed a toothy grin.

Jinki’s bright beam seemed to be shifting Taemin’s mind from his normal thought, that he began stammered with his not-really an answer, “I-I thought you were supposed to be having tea with our parents?”

“Let’s just say that the topic of their discussion now isn’t really my favorite one,” Jinki was back to sat again on the stool, brushing his fingers across the black keys.

Taemin giggled. “I think they’re not mine either,” he said sheepishly, secretly hoping the man before him would get the hint and wouldn’t shoo him away to wherever their parents were.

And he was glad that Jinki did. He moved to his side just enough to give Taemin more space than he would be needing to, as his left palm tapped the vacant area. Taemin gleefully complied, slowly placing himself next to someone who’s technically a stranger to him, yet also someone whom he would be living with forever from the day after.

Might as well got accustomed to everything about him before their new life started, right?

“Do you play?” Jinki asked, his eyes catching Taemin’s confused ones.

“I used to,” Taemin mumbled.

“So would you want to try playing again?” Another smile shaped the elder’s lips.

“I-I can’t, it’s been a long time since I last did.”

“What’s the use of the piano here, then?” Jinki laughed heartily, and Taemin’s cheeks tinged a light red at the lively sight.

“I knew how to play from our former pianist. But then Mom restricted me from learning more. She said I should concentrate on my study instead,” Taemin spoke almost without discern to his own voice, Jinki had to squint his eyes to focus on what the boy was saying. “She’s not that fond of music. She hates loud things.” Taemin was silent in few seconds before he spoke again,” Well.. actually.. she almost hates everything.”

Jinki hummed considerately, taking the time that it took to start another conversation so the condition wouldn’t get any awkward. “But come on, it can’t be that bad. Besides, I really want to hear it,” Jinki insisted. He himself couldn’t get why he suddenly turned to be such a busybody in front of this boy.

“Don’t tell me I didn’t warn you, Jinki,” Taemin laughed quietly.

He slowly inhaled a good intake of breath as he flexed his fingers and cracked his knuckles. Jinki leaned his head to his palm, his bended arm supporting its weight near the music rack, eyes darting to take in the other boy’s feature.

The next few minutes were filled with some discordant and missed tones, but Jinki’s experienced ears could still grasp what the latter was trying to play. It lasted until the end of the song, and Taemin just had to mess up a little bit more on the outro, that eventually Jinki came to his breakdown. He was trying hard to hold his laugh, but couldn’t help it as a loud snort spilled out.

“I told you, my playing is awkward,” he pouted, and Jinki suddenly wished he didn’t, because it took all he’s got to not simply kiss the boy’s lips.

Jinki held Taemin’s hand and placed it on the keys again, the touch sending a glow of excitement through their veins. “Here, you just have to loosen up a bit,” his fingers took a place just beside the boy’s and began pressing some notes, inviting the latter to follow him. Taemin’s fingers soon copying his movement, it actually worked well because now he managed not to cringe at his own playing. They got to reach the second verse and that’s when Taemin decided to just stop and listen to the harmonic tune that the elder’s smooth finger’s motion was creating.

“Music is more than just a simple loud thing. It is a way to express your feeling when everybody around is too busy to listen. It speaks for your true emotion, so you would never lose track on what you really want and need all the time,” Jinki’s fingers finally stopped. He lifted his gaze, staring deeply into Taemin’s and just like that, they knew that both of them understood what he’s implying. “You shouldn’t stop playing,” Jinki’s eyes softened, again that gentle smile appearing.

Taemin looked hesitant at first, but then he carefully spoke, “What do you feel now?”

“About this marriage?” Jinki asked as the boy nodded. “Well, I do have mixed ones about that,” he uttered, all at once convincing himself that it wasn’t all lies. “How about you?”

There was a pinkish blush slowly forming on the younger’s cheeks, and Jinki could hear his own heart beat a little faster.

“I.. I think I like you already.”
