This is just a rough draft for chapter one of my fanfic.  Been working on this...  felt like sharing some of it.

“ One Last Story “
By Sailor Poison

Chaper 1

Clouds drifting along through the skies.  Higher then the airship itself, remnants of wings seem to hang over the world.  The airship  pushing though between heaven and earth, pushing clouds aside.  Her pilot, a mid thirties man with light blond hair and eyes that reflect the sky.

Time seems to keep moving.  Has it already been a few months since Deep Ground’s was a danger?  WRO still trying to clean up after the mess of secrets left by the ShinRa corporation.  Not even Rufus knew the depth of dirty little secrets that existed under the once proud city of Midgar.   It is left to men such as Reeve to muddle through the chaos of Deep Ground’s base.

Men like Cid to help out when they can.  The very thought is almost amusing to the Captain.  Not that things were boring.  His wife being all pregnant with twins.  He has yet to get his mind around that one.  Will they identical  Be boys or girls?   As much as he assures his wife he wants healthy children as the priority, Cid really wants some boys.   Teach them how to be more proper men.

Then there is the one guy he’s suppose to be meeting today.  Cid tried to call his friend a few times.  At times, even wondering if Vincent lost his cellphone or forgot to turn it on.  Even left a voice message.

The airship Sierra slows as she comes to the entrance of the deep ground.  People on the ground scatter as they prepare for his arrival.  The men on board already have their cargo ready to be moved off.  Cid can’t help but smile at how smooth his men work.

Cid, “ Okay, boys, only the select team are to get off the airship.  Rest, I want to run diagnostics.  Don’t want a single thing breaking if I leave.  “

Airship landed and the cargo hold opens so they can start moving the special equipment off.   Each a platform meant to hover a set height to support the halls of the base.  It has been slow going trying to explore the old headquarters and some of the halls were collapsing.  There are still many questions left unanswered thanks to the bastards like Hojo.   Was he really gone?  Cid rather not find out.  The man creeps the hell out of him.

Hell, Cid knows many things he rather not be doing, like going underground for some damn walls and ceilings.  He hates to be underground and he hates to be underwater.  Give him the skies any day of the week.   Yet, he didn’t trust anyone else to install these platforms.  Spent too much time making them for Reeve to let some dumbass screw something up.

Cid takes a moment to check any messages on his phone.  Nothing aside an e-mail from Shera.  Oh yeah, her doctor’s appointment.  So far so good, according to the doctor.  Both babies are doing well inside her.

Cid gives his men a look over.  The team selected  because they can listen to directions and aren’t total screw ups mechanically. “  Okay men, lets get this shit started. “   His back to the exit of the ship.  Cold breeze seems to touch his spine as hand clamps on his shoulder.  Enough to make him jump and turn around nearly at the same time.

Dull red eyes look back in amusement.  Silent gunman, called  Vincent, who’s very steps seem to be impossible to hear.  Cid is clearly not amused by this.  Leave it up to Vincent to be hanging around like a bloody gargoyle and to spring up on you without warning.  Vincent, “ Hey, Chief. “  His cape sometimes moving as if live.  Old style black button shirt and slacks under his clothes, his style is modest.  Cid was not the only one to jump.

Cid still gives him a pissy look, “  Damn it, Vincent, you and Spike gotta do that shit?!  You and your damn entrances. “  With a huff adds, “ I swear you both are gonna be the death of me!  “  perhaps a bit over dramatic on that last statement.  Vincent’s expression for the moment is slight guilt and mirth. “ Nevermind....  You ready to be our guide? “

Vincent once again looks serious, “ We must be prepared for anything. “

Cid, “ Yeah... “  Looking at the open entrance of the base.  He fucking hates the underground.

The men push lifts toward the entrance.  Each lift with the precious cargo of the platforms.  Cid has to admit, this is an interesting distraction from the normal stress of his life.   Vincent pauses as he looks into the building.  Cid can see a moment of unease cross the gunman’s face.  Then Vincent turns to the men behind him, “  If I tell you to run, do it. “   Clearly trying to be reassuring, but the morose seriousness of his voice  killed it.  The men seem to get the chills.  is this really safe?   Cid gives a nod to his guide.  “  You heard him!   If he says for you all to do something, I ain’t wanting to hear you protest.  Do it! “

Vincent then turns and they all follow.  The base lit with artificial light.  Some places the lighting has failed.  All is quiet in the halls.  The dimmer lit areas seem to have a eerie quality to them.  Cid thinks they got all the critters out of here.  Or that's the last he was told by Reeve.   So far they have a list of what is running around.  Between Vincent and some of the better trained men, they cleared out the upper levels.  Cid can see the men even now looking to him.  He gives a smirk.  Something about seeing him fearless seems to help make them feel stronger.

God how he hates the underground.

Nothing seems to really happen.  They make it to the first hallway section without a hitch.  Cid oversees the installation of the platforms.  They each hold up like a dream.  Vincent seems to pause.  As if he hears something then shake his head.

Further down at the next section, they once again install the platforms.  Cid is feeling pretty good about this, despite where they are.  Hey, they might get done before Lunchtime!  Wait,  is that a strange tap tap noise?    Something not far off.   Something perhaps echoing in the walls.

Vincent watches the men work.  Aside the noises, all seem to be going well.  For a moment all goes quiet except for the men working.  Perhaps things will be uneventful after all?  This simple little hope inside the heart of a once time killer.  Vincent wishes they would not even come down here.  The whole place reeks of Hojo and his inhuman influences.  Yet, he could not fault them entirely for coming down.  They once tried to to bury this place and the dark sins still crept out like a sickness, to haunt the world.  As much as he wants to brick the doorway closed forever,  that is not an option.

His mind wanders for a second.  Only a mere second it seems before a shout of alarm makes him turn to the men.  This creature sticking out the  wall.  A horrific mess of metal plates and living flesh that reminds him of a centipede.   Hardly the harmless creature now, its head equipped with pincers around its mouth.  Man’s scream  as his body is cut in two with incredible ease.

Vincent’s hand already pulling the gun free from its holster.  His body leaping into the air as the creatures spill from the hole made by the first.  “ Out, “ are the only words he gives, gun blazing  at his new targets.  The men doing as they were told, Cid placing himself between the monsters and his retreating men as he also is backing from the room.  Men almost falling over their own feet trying to flee the room.  Vincent working on trying to blow them away.  The bullets needing to be precise to kill.  The shells of their bodies harder then expected.  Then a sound that makes Vincent turn to look.

Some of the bugs tried to break through a new spot between Vincent and the men.  The pilot holding his spear in hopes it will  block a strike that surely could have torn him in half.  Instead, his spear takes the blow, slicing clear through.  Something unexpected, like a sharp tongue striking out into Cid’s side, drawing blood.  Cid, without thinking punching the bug in the head.   Such a blow surely had to hurt.  The pilot was too busy feeling the high of adrenaline and rage, over his fallen man, to feel the pain fully.  Vincent rushes to grab the pilot away from the new hole.   Cid throwing some explosive into the new hole, right before being grabbed in a cradle.   The men already clear as Vincent leaps through the doorway, feeling the explosion behind him.  Fire spouting out the two holes where the bugs came no more,   Some of the room shaking  from the bomb, perhaps a room or two actually collapsed.   Dust and smoke all around making it hard to see for a few minutes.

“ Damn it, Vin, this is embarrassing! “

Vincent realizing he is still cradling the pilot against him.  Cid getting a little pink in the cheeks.  Vincent calmly asks, “ Are you okay? “ as he puts the man down on his feet.

Cid, wincing now that the battle is over, “ Fuck, think I broke my hand. “ Briefly checks his side.  There isn’t too much blood flowing.  Might need stitches eventually.  Quick little bandage job.  “ What the hell was that?! “

Vincent is already thinking of what needs to be done.  Cid and his crew need to leave this place.  What explosive was that?  He knows Cid likes to experiment with things but never seen that.  Cid...  could have died right in front of him.  Despite the calm face, that is something that sent a shiver a fear in his heart.  He takes the time to check the hand.   “ i believe you got some fractures in your metacarpals and at least two proximal phalanxes , the intermediate and distal look fine “.  Acquired some medical training being a Turk.  “ It will need a cast when we get out. “

Cid, “  I can’t go back yet. “

Vincent looks at the Captain in surprise.  Cid doesn’t tend to play hero if he can help it.  “ You are hurt. You need to get out of here. “

Cid for the moment presses his lips together as if gathering his thoughts, “ I have to, Vin.   I have to get to some computers and check the hell what happened. “  Pressing before Vincent can reply, “ This is gonna bug the hell out of me.   Besides, I ain’t planning to go any further then the closest Comp room from us.  “  Cracking a smirk, “ And, I have you to kick ass for me. “

Vincent suspects  Cid won’t change his mind without being knocked out.  The pilot is not that easy to knock out.   “ Just remember, Chief, heroes don't get to be old heroes by sticking their noses into every little mystery.  If I tell you to do something you will do it.  Stay behind me. “

Cid gives a snort, “ Hell, heroics is Cloud’s thing. “  Gives his men a last order to report to Reeve what's happened.   The Captain outlining where they needed to go with the same map he has been using to get to the rooms needing repair.  Now it serves to get them to  their new goal.  Vincent feels some relief they are merely an a hall and an elevator ride away.  Luck still not with them, The hall that was closest turns out collapsed.

Cid “ Break through here into this office and go around. “

That proves to be easier said then done.  Vincent once again ponders if he can convince Cid out of this idea.  Cid is forced to use a cutter to break through the wall.  The office as dead and dusty as ever.  They choose to not linger, nothing really useful in the room.  The doorway does take them to the other side of the mess.    Vincent pushes the button and notes that Cid has been quiet for most of this time, even before the bug attack.

The room with the mentioned computers is quite, aside the monitors showing many rooms and the usual sounds they make.  Cid goes on over, checking out the system to see what is going on.  There is nothing...  no sign of trouble but that doesn’t seem right.  Watching the screens, Vincent’s keen eyes can tell there seems to be a moment it skips; each scene is merely repeating itself in a loop.

Cid, “ Shelke came down and helped us link to the computers.  Someone else fucked with it since there.  “  Once the loop is ended they are now able to see what's is really going on.  Some of the rooms with more of these strange bugs.  If not for the attack, they may well have walked into a nightmare.  “ maybe we accidentally attracted the attention of scouts or hungry bugs in general.  “  One screen freezes on a room, large slightly different bug seems to be wrapped around a nest of sorts.  The others seem to act more like ants then centipedes.  The nest Vincent can only figure must be made from spit and trash woven carefully.  The idea of eggs being in there....  this is a terrible situation developing.

His eyes come across a image that makes Vincent hold his breath.  Man gazing into the camera from the side of the room.  Scowl not helping the looks of his face. Is he seeing things?  “  Hojo  “ whispers the name like a curse, for the man who is suppose to be dead...  not that it seemed to stop him from manipulating Weiss.  A blink later and there is no sign of Hojo.  Cid begins to curse because he hit his hurt hand on the  desk.

Cid, “ Motherfucker! “  Cradling his hand close to his chest.  “ Did I just see a fucking ghost?! “  Dealing with the supernatural is not his area.

Vincent, “ We need to leave.  Hojo knows we’re here. “

Cid stays a  little longer getting a full look over the room on screen, “ There seems to a doorway.  Looks jammed  but not fully closed. I wonder what's in there? “

Vincent, “ ... We need to leave now. “ Impatient to get his friend to safety.   Cid seems about to leave when something perks the ears.

Some static comes over the intercom of the computer.  “  Some...  help...  don’t just leave us to be damn bug food!....  “  Some of it is broken.  Cid tries to adjust the comp, “ We hear ya.  Where are you? “

“ In some room.  Th...   Huge bugs outside. ...  No weapons...  “

Cid, “ Stay there!  We’ll get you out, “ turns to Vincent, “ Someone is trapped in there?  Who the hell would be dumb enough to get trapped there of all places? “

Vincent isn’t certain of this either, “ ... Maybe the ones who looped the computer?  Maybe victims of Hojo. “

Cid, “ Hell, I ain’t much use in there.  You need better ammo.  Get yas some of my new explosives while up there.   That sound good?  Hell, Hojo, ghost or not, I can’t leave anyone in his hands. “ Turns to see Vincent is already heading to the elevator and hurries after.  “ Wait up! “

Vincent can only think of all the horrors Hojo created and done.  Done to him and other innocent lives.  First, to get to the surface.  Once they get onto the lift, Vincent pushes the up button.  At least, Cid is still keeping his word about not trying to be a hero.  Vincent glances over and sees Cid looking a little pale.  It will be a good thing for the pilot to get out.  The other man’s talking on his phone to Reeve,  “ Sorry I didn’t contact you sooner.... “  Updating Reeve on things, despite the rooms being sent to his people already.  “  Yeah, have some men fetch ammo for Vincent.  We’ll need as many armor piercing you can.   Get some of my men to get that beta type explosive I’ve been making. “  Still talking as they get off the lift,

Last Vincent sees of Cid,the pilot going off with a red head he has never seen before.  Some woman named Darla.  Normally he would prefer to inquire about her but now is hardly the time.  His ammo now replenished with some armor piercing rounds and some explosives.  God help the poor soul, keep him safe till he can reach him.
