Bizarre cold call from the bastard children of Mary Whitehouse

Dec 03, 2007 15:52

UK Flisters will already know who I mean, for the most part, when I mention Mary Whitehouse. She was a Christian who campaigned to 'clean up' film and television and radio when I was growing up. Glasses, stern face like a bulldog chewing a wasp, permed and blue rinsed in her old age. You get the picture ( Read more... )

Blegh. I'm glad I'm not home during the day, if that's the sort of stuff you get. My sympathies.

Are you ex-directory? If you are, then unless you've personally given them your phone number, then to the best of my knowledge, it's illegal for them to have it on their database.

Thankfully, apart from idiots who read the Daily Hate Mail, there isn't that much support for such self-rightous bollocks in this country, unlike the USA. Censorship groups like this rarely seem to get very far.

May I borrow your account of events and post it to a community I'm part of? They may have more clues about who this group are.

Sure, of course. We are ex-dir and a business number, to boot. So how and why a horrible group like this got our number, I have no clue at all. If I knew, I'd be dealing with it with them and then with OFTEL.

Kitty_Lemon is now mewing with a high degree of disgust after hearing about this nasty experience you've had inflicted upon you! He and I hope you discover who is responsible for the call and that they're brought to book swiftly.

We've already registered with TPS because we're a business line (ie himself's company pays for our phone and broadband as he does on call shifts for them). So all I can think is this is an auto dialler (or someone playing a sick joke). Not pleasant though - if that's Christian morality they can keep it.

Well, still waiting for all the 'results' to come in, but we've already got some interesting leads into who may be responsible.

I will keep you informed.

Thanks B :-)

Please do add to the thread that I did ask who was calling (ex-journo, know the drill) and am not easily shocked. That was when I got the 'it's not a sales call, I just need about 90 seconds of your time'. It was how quickly the diatribe started to happen when I calmly said I disagreed that really bothered me the most.

It did feel like a 'false survey' with questions they hoped the person called would say yes to and leading you to donating. Not that I'm cynical, of course, or that I have seen call scripts aplenty over far too many years.
