Unfortunately, I think you're kind of screwed as far as the laptop goes. Microsoft has dropped all support for Windows 98, and I don't know that the updates can be gotten anywhere else. I found this: http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/corporate.asp but I have no idea if that'll help you. There's also this: http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html
As for firefox, you could try this, http://johnhaller.com/jh/mozilla/windows_95/

I guess I was into one of my "not really following my Friends' LJ's" phases around this time last year, 'cos I totally missed that entire Mom's Broken Arm Incident. Glad to hear this Easter involved no such mishaps, even if that must have made things more boring.
