when i got laid off the 2nd, 3rd, who knows which time ~ one of those ~ i had a food budget of about $11 a week.
i ate garlic, pasta, mushrooms, popcorn, ramen, drank diet coke (sometimes store-brand "cola"), and occasionally splurged on cheese or fruit (and if i was really feeling splurgy, i'd buy catfish at $1.99 a pound).
i lived like this for about six months.
i could do it again if i had to. it wasn't deadly. but nowadays i spend about $25-30 on food per week.
It cracks me up that the first thing on your list is "garlic". Like, forget all that pasta and ramen, you just remember the garlic. (As do, indubitably, those close to you.)
Looks like we had a similar experience. Doable, able to maintain a reasonably healthy diet, but incredibly monotonous, and there's nothing in the budget for a splurge.
Ah, the days when I had $20 per week to spend on food. That's when I discovered Trader Joe's--more healthy choices, for lower prices. (Still, when bread-and-peanut butter is one of your dinner choices...heh. I'm glad I can now spend a tad more on food.)
