Freakish

I finished Freaks, and liked it, with two exceptions right at the end. Both are fairly spoilery, so they're under the cut.

1. There's a vast diverse cast, but in the end it's basically fully-abled white men to the rescue.* Sigh.

2. No comment on the biracial marriage? Not even one? This is 1899, it's still going to be illegal for sixty more years in some states. Shouldn't that at least give someone pause?

*Not that camels aren't awesome. They really are.

As with Blood and Chocolate, I liked recognizing stuff: oh yeah, I read about that particular freak once before, yeah, I know that circus slang. I get the idea we've read a lot of the same stuff. I need to keep my eye on Annette Curtis Klause. She writes about things I want to read about.

Next up, I have to finish Rules for Saying Goodbye. Substantially fewer freaks, substantially more postmodern pathos.
