Media Recap

This year, for some reason I thought I'd write down all the books I read and movies I saw over the course of 2008. Somehow the lists actually turned out pretty complete. The number of novels I read was kind of depressingly low, but the graphic novels, man, I really racked up. So I'm going to list them here, in no particular order, and maybe make a ( Read more... )

I'd be curious about your reaction to Evolve or Die, 100 Bullets, and Hellblazer- all of which I've read at least a little of in the last year.

And, since I'm asking:

I really enjoyed Straczynski's work on Spider-Man- Evolve or Die would have felt a little out of left-field except for the chapters that lead up to it. 100 Bullets confused the heck out of me once it became apparent there was an actual plot. And Hellblazer kind of swings between cleverly engaging, dully bizarre, and unreadably vulgar.

See, I didn't read anything leading up to Evolve or Die, so I was just like, "Well...that was different. Moving on." I liked the art. I guess since I'm not plugged into the comics continuum (which is a rant for another day) it was hard to take seriously. I think I just chalked it up as an imaginary story and forgot about it. Plus I think I read like four other comics that day ( ... )

I think I just chalked it up as an imaginary story and forgot about it.

Marvel apparently decided to do the same thing.

Constantine the character I really enjoy- the first I ever read of him had him... selling his memories to an Aztec death god to bribe it to kill of demons, then using voodoo to banish the god itself. That was pretty compelling. Every other writer, though, I think I hate, so it's still kind of a mixed bag.

I think my first or second Constantine had him trying to sell his soul...which caused a panic and crashed the soul stock market. I mean, holy crap.

Some of these in your GN and movie lists surprise me. I'd have thought you'd have come across a LOT of this stuff sooner.

Well, that's it: "come across." Tahm can tell you about our media access growing up. I didn't have a car in college, so I pretty much had to take what they gave us. Until last year my comic book store was this skeevy cave in the corner of the top floor of a half-abandoned mall--so I didn't go there. Our library only just bulked up its graphic novel section. This year I made a concerted effort to read the best, usually resorting to ordering them online or using inter-library loan...so a lot of this I might never have come across, I had to seek it out.

Exception being The Crow. That one just fell into my lap.
