I may have to quote you when I write my own response to this later, is that okay? It jumped out at me as I was browsing the answers to see what reasons anyone can possibly give for answering "yes" :/ b

And I found it from reading your writer's block, haha. :) I like both of your answers.

LOL nice one.

It's kind of a silly question. I'm pretty sure the only reason we have marriage licenses anyway is just as a formality to make sure they're not like, marrying their close family members and stuff. >_>

Some of it also dates back to the Middle Ages (or so my history book claimed), when there wasn't any such thing and people could get married basically by saying they were married. A perhaps unsurprising number of these "proposals" occurred with the couple already in bed... and afterward, either could deny that the agreement had been made, leaving the other partner with no real recourse.

So licenses were invented basically to stop people from being jerks. At least, again, so my understanding goes.

Then again, why is it called a license at all? A license is something you earn or purchase that grants you permission to do something. If anything, it should be called a marriage certificate.

I think it actually says "certificate" on mine, anyway. XD
