Do NOT read this until you have seen the latest FAQ answer on JKRowling.com. It contains a disappointing spoiler.

I know I'm late to the discussion, but I had to weigh in on the Mark Evans issue.

Yes, JKR is brilliant and subtle. She is also, however, occasionally wrong. She once estimated the population of Hogwarts at about 2000, which doesn’t jive with the class sizes. In GoF, she switched the order that the Potters come out of Voldemort’s wand; in OotP, she somehow got Dennis Creevey to the D.A. meeting in Hogsmeade even though he’s only a second year. Most relevantly, she just named her kid David because there isn’t one in the books -- forgetting about Davey Gudgeon, who almost lost an eye to the Whomping Willow.

The Point: There’s a good chance that Mark’s a long-lost cousin who ends up at Hogwarts next year (JKR made a big point of the fact that he’s ten). But there’s an equally good chance that Her Authorship merely had a brain blip and forgot that Evans was an important name in the series.

My only point being, I guess I was prepared for this.
