Is there another way to get from San Fransisco to Los Angeles that does not include renting a car? We are flying in to SanFran and out from LA and they charge ridiculous fees to pick up in one place and drop off at another. We could probably buy a car for cheaper ( Read more... )

It might be cheaper to look into a one way flight to LA. Southwest, flying out of San Jose, should have a good one way rate, and Jet Blue and Virgin both have a flight out of San Francisco every hour.

Amtrak runs busses and trains. I think it's around fifty bucks a person (however, the further you book in advance, the cheaper it'll be). That'll take you around nine hours though. Grey Hound gives you the same time frame and is only marginally cheaper, although you can get a discount if you book online (which, who wouldn't in this day and age).

I just checked now and Delta is running $50 a person flights from SFO to LAX. Get on that!

If you have some way to get to Oakland or San Jose, Amtrak is USUALLY reasonable, and quite enjoyable in my opinion. It is a very long ride, but there aren't baggage restrictions like airlines.

Greyhound works too, but some of the stations are seriously shady, and the buses themselves are hit or miss.

what everyone else said. If nothing else, you can always see if there's an overnight train so that you don't lose daytime hours.

Also, if you're coming to town, give a yell if you have time to hang out - it'd be nice to say hey! ;)

Fly. Seriously.

Having done the bus trip a couple times, it's really not worth it unless you want to spend ten hours watching the roads roll by. It's not that big of a money saver.

And also... WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO BE IN MY CITY?!
